PROVO, Utah – The first true road trip of the season didn't start ideal, but it didn't have any effect on the way Zara Lennon has been playing.
Â
Colorado State's women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to BYU on Saturday, the lone point coming when Lennon won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, her eighth consecutive singles win. She didn't surrender enough to give up a set in taking down Tina Li 6-2, 6-3.
Â
"Zara has put in a lot of work on and off the court, and it's great to see how it's paying off," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "She's one of the hardest working players. I'm proud of the way she's been competing, and she's been a strong asset to the team."
Â
While the final score may have been lopsided, the Rams did put up a few challenges along the way, with two matches requiring a third set, the last of them using a 10-point tiebreaker as the deciding margin with the team score already decided.
Â
Sarah Weekley lost a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 decision to Kendall Kovick at No. 3, while Logan Voeks fell at the No. 6 spot to Madison Smith, 0-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Â
The doubles were played out to start the day, with the Cougars winning all three matches to claim the point. The tightest of the trio was the final match at No. 1, where Buzkova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya fell in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4).
Â
"BYU played well today and there were some key points where we were unable to execute our game plan and that could have changed the trajectory of the match," Tran said. "We will take a few good points from this and get ready for tomorrow's match."
Â
Colorado State will be back on the court Sunday to face Utah in Salt Lake City. The match begins at 11 a.m.
