Colorado State set to play first conference series of the 2024 season

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Following two weekends spent at home and showcasing a remarkable ten-game winning streak, the Colorado State softball team (17-8) is prepared to kick off its Mountain West campaign on the road, facing UNLV (15-8) in a two-game series in Las Vegas.

What You Need to Know 

  • The Rams are scheduled for a two-game series against the Rebels, with games set for 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday, marking the commencement of the 2024 Mountain West season. 

  • Colorado State softball is entering the conference season with a 17-game win record, its best start since its highly successful 2019 season when it clinched first place in the Mountain West. 

  • Both games against the Rebels will be streamed via the Mountain West Network. 

Scouting the Rebels 

  • The Rebels were predicted to finish sixth overall in the Mountain West preseason poll and will take a 15-8 record into conference play. 

  • UNLV enters the conference schedule with a .320 team batting average, while its opponents have a .236 batting average against them. 

  • In 2023, the Rebels emerged victorious in the conference series against the Rams, taking two of three games. Overall, Colorado State holds a 51-48 record against UNLV. 

  • UNLV's junior infielder, Ariana Martinez, and senior outfielder, Maddie Schmidt, were selected for the All-Mountain West Preseason team. Presently, Martinez holds a batting average of .375, while Schmidt leads the team with a .425 average. 

Game Notes  

  • Over the past weekend, Colorado State dominated the Rams Invitational, securing an impressive 5-0 record and outscoring their opponents 50-6. Notably, two of these victories were secured within just five innings. 

  • Sophomore Giselle Bentley maintains her lead in the Rams' pitching staff with an ERA of 1.87. 

  • The Rams head into the weekend with 14 homers tallied for the season. Peyton Allen hit her second career grand slam on Sunday afternoon, just a week after her the first of her career.  

  • Ashley York, Molly Gates, and Allen each contributed a homer in the first inning of Monday's 10-3 win over Drake. 

  • Senior Molly Gates demonstrated her effectiveness at the plate, tallying eight RBI over the weekend. Gates currently leads the Rams with 17 RBI on the season. Additionally, she shares the second position for hits on the team with Maya Matsubara, with each player boasting 25 hits. 

  • Matsubara continues to excel at the plate with an impressive batting average of .368. Throughout the weekend, she added four RBI to her stat line while her fielding effectiveness remains among the top of Mountain West shortstops at .982.
