Rams Fall in Extra Innings to Nevada

3/22/2024 8:49:00 PM | Softball

Colorado State unable to limit late game rally from Wolf Pack

FORT COLLINS – Entering the day 10-0 at Ram Field, the Colorado State softball team dropped its first home game of the season in its Mountain West home opener against Nevada Friday evening, needing extra innings to come to a 13-6 final score.

It was late game momentum swing for the Wolf Pack that disrupted the Rams' conference home opener as Colorado State jumped on the board first in the first inning when four hits led to three runs for Colorado State. Ashley York, Peyton Allen and Molly Gates all came around to score for the Rams.

After the first, it was a true pitching duel in Fort Collins between Colorado State starting pitcher Sydney Hornbuckle and Nevada starting pitcher Carley Brown. The second, third and fourth innings would all be scoreless.

From there, the Wolf Pack found themselves in the third time around the batting order against Hornbuckle and scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, creating momentum in favor of the away team. Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rams held a 3-2 lead.

Colorado State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Carolina Buffaloe scored Morgan Crosby, who pinch ran for Brooke Bohlender. Kaylynn English, who was pinch running for Hornbuckle, then scored on a wild pitch. But the two runs proved to not be enough insurance when the Wolf Pack came up to bat in the top of the seventh.

The Rams had Nevada down to its final out of the game when Bridgette Gilliano gave the Wolf Pack the lead with one swing of the bat. A grand slam to left field put the Wolf Pack up one run with Colorado State's last at-bats coming up.

Head coach Jen Fisher's Rams were able to force extra innings by tying the game at six, thanks to back-to-back hits from Allen and Danielle Serna, who scored Allen all the way from first base with a one-out double. The Rams then drew bases loaded on Nevada but were unable to cash in the game winning run from third base in the seventh.

The top of the eighth inning saw seven Wolf Pack runs come around to score, sealing the victory for Nevada when the Rams left two runners stranded in the bottom half of the extra inning.

Colorado State will face Nevada once again Saturday for game two of the three game series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
