Colorado State celebrates Inclusive Excellence and Ag Day on Saturday at Ram Field
FORT COLLINS -Â The Colorado State softball team dropped both games of the Saturday doubleheader against the Nevada Wolf Pack, falling in game one 4-0 and in game two 10-7.
Â
Game one was the only matchup between these two teams to be low scoring. Colorado State pitcher Danielle Serna threw the complete game against the Wolf Pack with nine strikeouts and only allowed six hits. But it was Wolf Pack starting pitcher Blake Craft that kept the Rams scoreless through game one for the complete game shutout.
Â
Ashley York, Maya Matsubara, Peyton Allen, Molly Gates and Sydney Hornbuckle all totaled hits in game one, but CSU left nine runners stranded throughout the game, surrendering game two of the series and game one of the day to Nevada, 4-0.
Â
In game two, Colorado State jumped on the board first with a first inning solo home run from Matsubara, her third of the season.
Â
The Wolf Pack responded with three more runs each in the second and third inning, just when it felt like the Rams were finally starting to gain momentum.
Â
Despite that, Colorado State swung the pendulum back into its favor, scoring six runs across the fourth and fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
Â
In the fourth, a hit from Serna followed by a Brooke Bohlender two-run home run sparked the Colorado State offense.
Â
The fifth inning counted four Ram runs to come around and score thanks to six straight Rams reaching base. After Jailey Wilson drew a walk to lead off the inning, York hit a one-out double before Matsubara scored Wilson with an RBI single. Allen then doubled to right center, clearing the bases and tying the game at six.
Â
After Serna reached base via a hit-by-pitch, Gates singled to left field, scoring the speedy Allen all the way from second in order to take the lead.
Â
The Wolf Pack were down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh, but Nevada proved to use those three outs wisely with three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning including a three-run home run from Maile Olsen that would be the game winner for Nevada.
Â
Colorado State will head back on the road next weekend, traveling to San Diego for the second time this season, this time to face the San Diego State Aztecs in a Thursday-Saturday conference series matchup. Game one will kick off Thursday at 7 p.m.
