Colorado State returns home for senior weekend with strong win
FRESNO, Calif. - The Colorado State softball team took the final game of the series over the Fresno State Bulldogs 11-1 in run rule fashion, returning home going 1-2 in the series.
Â
After scoring double digit runs in six of seven straight game to enter the weekend, Colorado State struggled offensively the first two game of the series against the Bulldogs, but once it rains it pours for the Rams and that's exactly what took place Sunday afternoon.
Â
The scoring got started in the first inning when Hailey Smith batted in Ashley York who reached base to leadoff the game. The Rams tacked on two more when freshman Jailey Wilson drove in Smith and Danielle Serna with a two-out single to go up 3-0.
Â
The Bulldogs threatened with a run and baserunners in the second, but after that it was all Rams.
Â
In the third inning, Molly Gates drove in Peyton Allen from third base with a ball in play to the left side of the field before Wilson came up with another RBI, this time in a more unconventional way. Wilson swung at strike three in the dirt, but with the pitch getting by the catcher, Smith scored from third base while Wilson legged out the throw to first and advanced to second on an error.
Â
The lead was up to 5-1.
Â
Freshman pitcher Reagan Wick reentered the circle in the bottom of the third inning and continued her dominance throughout the game throwing four more scoreless innings. She finished the day with two strikeouts, allowing only four hits in a complete game effort.
Â
The sixth inning is where the Rams broke open the game, opening the inning with back-to-back singles from Gates and Wilson. Gates scored the first run of the game when Wilson broke to steal second and was thrown out, but Gates in turn took off for home, sliding in safely.
Â
Now with two outs, Brooke Bohlender continued the rally for the Rams with a single to left field followed by three straight doubles from Colorado State off the bats of York, Matsubara and Serna, bringing the lead up to 10-1, which is over the necessary eight run margin for a run rule. Just to be safe, the Rams added one more run with a Smith RBI single.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Allen was a part of her second double play of the afternoon, tagging out a runner in the baseline before flipping it to Wilson at first to end the game with a 11-1 final score.
Â
York, Smith and Wilson all ended the day with two hits while Serna added two RBI.
Â
The Rams will return home for the final weekend of the regular season next weekend, hosting Boise State in a Thursday-Saturday series.
