Rams Drop High Offensive Game to Broncos
5/3/2024 10:27:00 PM | Softball
31 runs scored collectively at Ram Field Friday
Â
Despite every Ram who stepped up to the plate earning a hit, Colorado State was outhit 22-13 in seven innings.
Â
Eight runs in the first inning for the Broncos set the tone for the game as the Rams knew they had a long way to crawl back from. Boise added three more runs in the top of the second and top of the fourth after the Rams were able to get on the board in the bottom of the first and add another run in the bottom of the third, both off the bat of Danielle Serna.
Â
With the score at 14-2 heading into the fourth inning, Colorado State had its eyes on extending the game past five innings, which needed to happen first before any type of wild comeback was possible.
Â
A five-run inning in the fifth added some intensity back into the Colorado State dugout and to the Ram faithful who were still in the stands despite the cold, windy Colorado night.
Â
Two home runs in the fifth, a three-run shot from Ashley York and a two-run homer from Serna that bounced just off the glove of the Boise State left fielder, off the foul pole and back into play, but was inevitably ruled a home run, had the Rams within seven, which was under the run-rule margin.
Â
When Boise State added one more to its cause in the top of the fifth, the Rams found themselves in a need-to-score inning in hopes of extending the game.
Â
After two hits from Molly Gates and Brooke Bohlender put runners on with two-outs, Maya Matsubara drew a nine pitch walk to load the bases. Peyton Allen then entered the batter's box for the Rams and after working a 3-1 count, wore a pitch right off her helmet, earning the hit-by-pitch and the RBI needed to go back below the run-rule margin.
Â
The Rams dugout and fans reacted as if they had just taken the lead, celebrating everything they could during the last home weekend of the season and this time, they were celebrating getting to watch more softball.
Â
Extending the game just extended the batting practice for both teams with Boise State adding five more runs to its campaign while the Rams scored three more to reach a final score of 20-11.
Â
Serna finished the day with four RBI while York added three and Bohlender tallied two hits. Gates reached base in four out of five appearances, drawing three walks on the night as well.
Â
Colorado State will close out the series and regular season Saturday where the Rams will face the Broncos in game three of the series while also celebrating the nine Rams seniors on Senior Day in Fort Collins. First pitch is set for noon.
