Team heads to Bedford Cup for first competition of season
FORT COLLINS – To get the ball rolling for the 2024-2025 season, Colorado State's women's tennis team will participate in the Bedford Cup, hosted by Air Force, Friday through Sunday.
Â
The Rams will see competition from nine other teams, including Mountain West foes Wyoming and New Mexico along with the hosts. Others in attendance are Denver, Weber State, Montana State, Idaho State, South Dakota and Davidson.
Â
Since this is the first competition and it requires the team to travel together for the first time, it provides a chance to bond and get to know teammates, including the two freshmen. The coaches also get to use this as a first look at how the team is competing and where the players' strengths and weaknesses are.
Â
"It's a chance for us to see our newcomers compete and, also, the level of our returners," coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "It can set the tone for the year and give us a good idea of what we are working with."
Â
The three-day tournament opens Friday at 9:15 a.m., with two rounds of play in singles, one in doubles. Saturday flips the script, with two rounds of doubles and one in singles. The event concludes Sunday with final-round matches (starting with doubles) at 9:45 a.m.
Colorado State is coming off an 11-12 dual record in 2023-24, a season where the Rams made a run to the semifinals for the second time in three seasons and just the third time in program history. The Rams have five returners from that team, led by All-Mountain West doubles player Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya. Also back are Luana Avelar and Logan Voeks, who earned all-tourney doubles honors, as well as Sarah Weekley and Victoria Erechtchenko.Â
