Brousseau throws three touchdown passes in win
FORT COLLINS – In a season which had been following Murphy's Law, Colorado State found a way to reverse the karma.
Entering the game with just one healthy captain out of six and missing 10 former starters overall, the Rams started executing Friday night at Canvas Stadium. And being explosive. And generating turnovers and pressure on defense.
Scoring touchdowns on it's first four drives of the game and adding a fifth by the defense, the Rams jumped out to quick lead against Fresno State, producing a 49-21 victory, snapping a three-game skid for them and a five-game run for the Bulldogs. The Rams improved to 2-4 on the year, 1-1 in Mountain West play.
Justin Marshall opened the scoring with a 73-yard run down the home sideline, the longest scoring play of the season for the team. It was also the first opening-drive touchdown of the season, and the Rams liked it so much, they kept going.
Four consecutive drives. Quarterback Jackon Brusseau capped the next three with scoring passes, two to tight end Rocky Beers, the other to running back Javion Kinnard. He became the first CSU quarterback in two seasons to throw a trio of scoring passes in a game.
One of them was set up by a Jace Bellah interception, the first of his career. The second turnover the defense produced they cleaned up themselves, as Paul Tangelo rumbled 36 yards for a touchdown after Kenyon Agurs stripped a scrambling E.J. Warner from behind. On the night, the defense would create four turnovers.
It was the first time since 2017 (Boise State) the Rams scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the game.
The burst led to a 35-7 lead for Colorado State, but Fresno State rallied behind Warner and 464 yards of total offense. Warner threw three touchdown passes in the game, two to Josiah Freeman, the other to Rayshon Luke as the Rams offense stalled to open the second half.
After the CSU defense thwarted two promising Fresno State drives at the end of the third and into the fourth, the offense responded with a touchdown drive to extend the lead back to three touchdowns. Keyed by Kinnard's 41-yard burst on a swing pass which put the Rams in the red zone, Lloyd Avant broke free for a 12-yard touchdown around the left side of the line.
The defense came up big again to help seal the win as C.J. Blocker intercepted Warner in the end zone with just 4:30 remaining in the contest. With just 2 minutes remaining, Bellah put the postage on the package with his second interception of then evening, and Jalen Dupree delivered the final blow in the win with a 4-yard scoring run.
