Colorado State to travel to New Mexico State for opening weekend

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State softball team will kick off the 2025 season at the New Mexico State Invitational February 7-9. The Rams will compete in five games over the course of three days, starting with their first game of the season against UC Santa Barbara.

What You Need to Know

  • Colorado State is set to take on UC Santa Barbara in its first game of the Invitational on Friday at 10:30 AM in Las Cruces, New Mexico. 
  • The Rams are predicted to finish sixth in the Mountain West Pre-Season poll which came out earlier this spring.
  • The Rams welcomed 10 freshmen into the program this season, after a large nine-person senior class departed in 2024.

Scouting the Invitational 
  • Over the course of the weekend, the Rams will face UC Santa Barbara twice, New Mexico State twice, and Kansas City once to make up their five-game slate.
  • The Rams have faced UC Santa Barbara three times in previous years, with their most recent matchup back in 2016. Last season the Gauchos finished ranked fifth in the Big West, going 14-13. The Gauchos relied heavily on senior Madelyn McNally, who finished the season with a .424 batting average and recorded 70 hits on the season. UCSB also turned to power hitters junior Elicia Acosta who recorded six home runs and sophomore Jazzy Santos who recorded five home runs. Freshman Ainsley Waddell had a strong first year for the Gauchos as she finished the season with a .342 batting average and four Freshman of the Week awards in the Big West. Waddell was also named to the Second Team All-Big West and All-Freshman team. The Gauchos ranked second in overall hitting percentage in the conference after recording a .291 team batting average. UCSB is predicted to finish third in the Big West according to the preseason coaches' polls. 
  • The Rams have faced New Mexico State 22 times in previous years dating all the way back to 2004, with their most recent matchup in 2023. Last season the Aggies finished ranked fourth in Conference USA. They relied heavily on junior Dezianna Patmon, who had a team-high .387 batting average, recorded 15 home runs, was named the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year and was awarded All-CUSA First Team. Alongside Patmon, freshman Desirae Spearman was named the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year for Conference USA, while Devin Elam was named to the All-CUSA First Team. New Mexico State is predicted to finish third in CUSA according to preseason polls. 
  • The Rams have faced Kansas City three times in previous years, their most recent matchup back in 2013. Last season the Kangaroo's finished the season ranked fourth in the Summit League. They relied heavily on senior Lexy Smith who recorded a .366 batting average, 53 hits and five home runs. During the 2024 season, the Roos had four recognitions for All-Summit League Awards. Kadin Vire was recognized as Freshman of the Year, Camryn Stickel was named All-Summit League First Team as a pitcher, joined by Lexy Smith. Lauren Parker notched a spot on the Second Team. 
Game Notes 
  • Sophomore Jailey Wilson was named to the 2025 Mountain West Preseason Team after a strong freshman season with the Rams. During the 2024 season, she was named to the All-Mountain West Second-Team after posting a .358 batting average, which ranked 20th overall in the conference.
  • Brooke Bohlender returns for her senior season ready to lead a young Rams roster. The catcher returns the majority of Colorado State's at-bats from the 2024 starting lineup. As a team, the Rams return 349 at-bats, 126 credited to Bohlender. She finished the season with a .302 batting average, 38 hits, 17 RBI and a .444 slugging percentage. Defensively, Bohlender recorded 136 putouts, 15 assists and a .987 fielding percentage. CSU feature writer Mike Brohard sat down with Bohlender ahead of this season.
  • Some upperclassmen to look out for include Morgan Crosby, Carolina Buffaloe and Morgan Coleman. While all three of these seniors have recorded field time for the Rams throughout their careers, this year posts one of the first full starting opportunities for all three. 
  • Jordan West will also return as a senior in 2025, having her 2024 season cut short with a lower-body injury. West played eight games last year where she had three hits, one of which being a triple and recorded 10 putouts with eight assists and a fielding percentage of .900 at third base.
