Colorado State heads to San Jose State after a successful first conference series

FORT COLLINS - The Colorado State softball team will travel to San Jose for the second week of Mountain West play March 21-23. The Rams will compete in three games over the course of three days, opening with their first game on Friday against San Jose State.

What You Need to Know

  • After the first week of conference, Colorado State is ranked third in the Mountain West after taking the series 2-1 against UNLV.
  • This weekend will be the first away weekend for the Rams during conference play, and their first time hitting the road in three weeks. 
  • All three games will be streamed on Mountain West Network for fans to tune in.

Scouting the Spartans 

  • Last season the Spartans finished the regular season ranked eighth in the Mountain West after going 7-14 in conference and 18-27 overall. The Spartans are currently ranked seventh in the Mountain West after week one of conference play, in which they went 1-2 against New Mexico. Junior Reina Zermano has been a strong asset to the Spartans offense, leading the team with a .409 batting average. Zermano has currently recorded 27 hits, with seven doubles, 18 RBI and four home runs for a slugging percentage of .788. The Rebels have relied on senior Mia Reynolds in the circle, who currently holds a 7-9 record over 83.1 innings pitched. In previous years the Rams hold a winning record over the Spartans, with 19 wins over 13 losses, with their last match up ending in a 16-0 Rams victory. According to preseason polls, San Jose State is predicted to finish ninth in the Mountain West.

Game Notes 
  • Last weekend the Rams competed in an exciting first conference series against UNLV. The Rams defeated the Rebels in a 2-1 series after three exciting games at Ram Field.
  • Friday's game against the Rebels was a steady 9-5 win to start off conference play strong. This game included a home run from freshman Autumn Rutherford, four strikeouts dealt by Reagan Wick and three hits from Carolina Buffaloe.
  • Saturday's game against the Rebels was a 39 run hard fought battle, that eventually ended in a 19-20 Rams loss. During the game, the Rams had 21 hits, 18 RBI and a Carolina Buffaloe grand slam to keep the game going back and forth.
  • Sunday's game against the Rebels ended in a Ram victory due to a walk-off home run from Abby Edwards. Edwards currently has seven hits on the season with eight RBI, and was the Rams shining star to close out the opening series of conference play. 
  • Sophomore Kaylynn English currently leads the Rams offense with a .392 batting average after recording 20 hits, eight RBI and a slugging percentage of .510.
  • The circle for the Rams has been dominated by sophomore Reagan Wick who currently holds a .354 ERA with a record of 6-6. Wick has dealt 56 strikeouts for an opponent batting average of .274.
