Clouds Part for the Rams

Rams rely on strong pitching and timely hitting to edge out the Aztecs
The challenge was clear, despite a cloudy start.
With flurries drifting lazily from the sky, Colorado State softball took the field against San Diego State for the opening game of a pivotal two-game series. The Rams emerged with a gritty 2-1 victory – one that not only marked a shift in momentum, but also showcased the growing confidence of a squad coming into its own.
A year ago, the Aztecs swept CSU behind a suffocating defense and a fielding percentage which ranked among the best in the Mountain West. Their defensive dominance was on full display in that series, leaving little room for the Rams to breathe at the plate.
Coming into this season, the numbers still favored SDSU on paper – sporting a .969 fielding percentage compared to CSU's .955. Yet, as the Rams proved on a chilly Saturday afternoon, games aren't played on paper. They're fought and earned on the field.
"This is a big win for us," pitcher Reagan Wick said. "Especially coming off tough games against Utah State and Boise. This was really what we needed, especially since it's only a two-game series. I think it gives us the drive tomorrow to come out and still play good because we know they will too."
Wick's performance was the backbone of CSU's defensive effort. She commanded the circle with poise and presence, keeping the Aztecs scoreless through five innings. It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Aztecs finally broke through with a run – but by then, the Rams had already made their move.
Despite being just a sophomore, Wick leads the Mountain West in strikeouts, now totaling 26 over 36.1 innings pitched. Her composure and consistency have made her a quiet leader on a team still defining its identity.
"I'm proud of the way we played," coach Jen Fisher said. "I really liked the way a lot of our younger players stepped up, and how our leaders led today. We're usually scoring more runs than that, but Reagan – she pitched a great game and gave us exactly what we needed."
Offensively, the Rams started slow. The team went scoreless through three innings, struggling to break through against SDSU's tight defense. But everything changed in the fourth.
The inning began with a statement defensive play – Morgan Coleman's clutch catch for an out that sparked life into the CSU dugout. The energy carried into the bottom half of the inning, where true freshman Autumn Rutherford delivered the biggest swing of the game: a two-run home run that sent the Rams into the lead and shifted the tone of the afternoon.
"I've kind of been slumping a little bit the last few weekends," Rutherford admitted. "So, especially after last weekend, that home run helped bring my confidence back up. Gave us all a little more energy."
Rutherford's impact has been felt throughout the season. With 20 RBI and three home runs now under her belt, she continues to make a name for herself at bat – and on this day, her shot to left field came at the perfect time.
As the ball sailed over the fence, the clouds seemed to lift – both literally and metaphorically. The sun peeked through, the Rams came alive and the tone was set for a tightly contested final stretch.
SDSU continued to apply pressure through the seventh inning, threatening to erase the lead. But CSU's defense held strong. Wick and the rest of the Rams stayed poised, unified and focused – a testament to how much this team has grown since the season began.
"I think we've really found ourselves," Wick said. "We had practice yesterday and everyone was really focused. We just stayed steady. We trusted each other, and we knew we could get it done—on both sides of the ball."
With one game left in the series, Colorado State has a chance to do what it couldn't last year: take the series from a conference powerhouse. More than just a win, this game showed CSU how to find light even on the cloudiest of days.
