A Win for the Young and Old

Fout opens season with three-point night

The nature of sport is to lean on the veterans. The ones who know, who have fought and clawed through the years. To mentor the next wave.

Keeley Hagen's 2025 Colorado State women's soccer roster is a 50-50 split – 13 returners, 13 newcomers. There's going to be give and take, and on Thursday night, the Rams ended up taking more in a 2-1 season-opening victory over Utah Tech at Rams Field.

Hagen started a pair of freshmen in the match along with two transfers, three of the five found on the defensive end. On the offensive end, one of the most veteran members of the squad was feeling a bit new, too.

Senior Olivia Fout battled all last season coming back from a knee injury sustained in the 2023 Mountain West Championship tilt. She was slow out of the gates, then had a bit of a setback while spending the back end of the season regaining her form. She finished the 2024 campaign with a pair of goals and an assist, that coming off a record-setting 12 goal season after transferring in from Auburn.

She factored in all the scoring, gaining an assist on Kaja Dionne's opening tally, taking a nice feed from Michaela McGowan, clipping it behind her to Dionne, who hit the far side of the net while hitting the turf.

The opening salvo came in the 16th minute, then less than three minutes later, Fout settled a ball in the middle and found the upper part of the net for her 15th career tally.

"It felt great. It feels good to be back on the pitch with everyone," Fout said. "Seeing Kate (Dunne) go down, my heart shatters. I almost cried some tears because I've been there. But it was a great feeling with the ball hitting the back of the net on my senior season."

Her three-point night gives her 35 career points, tied with Grace Armstrong for second in program history, which is where she ranks in goals by herself.

And as pretty as the pass was, finding the net after spending a season finding her form led to a bit of relief.

"Probably my goal. I don't know," she said. "I haven't had a lot of confidence yet. So just taking it myself unassisted, cutting back and just ripping that shot and having that confidence, I was just proud of myself."

So was Hagen. When she first took over the program five years ago, she was struggling to find goal scorers. Now it looks as if she has a bevy of options on her team, and that's with losing three of the top six net finders from 2024.

Mia Casey, who led the team last year, returns, as does Dionne, who scored a trio in her debut season. Add in McGowan, who was active all night and displayed the type of speed which makes defenders nervous.

Hagan knows a return to form for Fout will make a difference.

"She's been through it, you know, like so many players have," she said. "And just to see her resilience, and this is her last season, and she's leaving it all out there. And when she does that, good things are going to happen."

As the game wore on, the Rams' chances were fewer and far between as they finished with nine shots (seven on goal), with the Trailblazers firing off 19 – only four on target.

And transfer goaltender Gray Willson stopped three of them at point-blank range.

The first came in the 21st minute as Jocelyn Wright was stuffed from close range while all alone.  The final two saves came in the final 10 seconds, stuffing Tessa Thornton on the left side of the night on back-to-back shots in desperation time. Tech's lone goal came from Brooke Hendricks, who clipped the crossbar for her tally in the 87th minute, making the game a bit more dicey.

"I just told the team, I said, 'listen, you know, we've come a long way.' And, you know, maybe a few years ago, we would have given up a goal there in the last second," Hagen said. "So, she made a big play. And we're still teaching some of our younger players to just manage the game a little bit better, which I think we could have done a better job, which probably would have helped. But, again, credit to Utah Tech. They were a solid team, and we made some adjustments and got organized, but they definitely challenged us for sure."

In front of her was a rebuilt back line, with the only returner being Dunne. And when she went down going for a header on the offensive end in the second half, it became younger when freshman Layla Jakins replaced her. That put her alongside Avery Boulom and fellow freshman Piper Carlson, who played all 90 minutes.

And well, too, regardless of an elevated heart rate at the start.

"Oh, there was a lot of anticipation going into it. Like playing on our home field," Carlson said. "We've been training for months, like a month I've been here. Just to see all of it, like a payoff being on the field under the lights, knowing all my teammates had my back, it was just an amazing feeling.

"I think I have a long way to come. I think as a freshman, I have a lot to learn. The girls have done a fantastic job of helping me learn and adapt. There's just so much that I need to learn and change in my game. But I think overall, I'm doing pretty good; trying to be confident."

Hagen was impressed with both of her freshmen, Hanna McKay included, who also played all 90 minutes in the midfield. The team has only been on campus for a month, but after an exhibition match and a home win, she can see pieces starting to fall into place, cohesion starting to develop.

All of it good. Like starting the season 1-0 is better than the alternatives.

"That's the name of the game, right? You don't want to get hot too soon," she said with a grin. "I think it's just game by game, training by training, and execution.

"It's execution on both sides. You know, I'd much rather win 8-0 than 8-7. But at the end of the day, when you score more goals than the other team, then we're going to be happy."

The Rams certainly were. Most definitely Fout.
