Team takes away lessons from challenges on every court
SPOKANE, Wash. – Growth comes in every match. For tennis, it shows up in every set, every rally, and every point. Some lessons are planned; some emerge through the moment.
Colorado State women's tennis wrapped up a full day of competition Friday, closing play with a 4–2 result against Eastern Washington after opening the day with a 4-0 loss against Gonzaga. Within the outcomes, the Rams demonstrated resilience, competitiveness, and continued growth early in the spring season.
The Rams earned three straight-sets singles victories against the Eagles after claiming the doubles point, with Leyla Tozin delivering a commanding win at No. 3 while dropping just two games and Hanna Haber adding another point for the Rams at No. 5.
Dylan Voeks earned her first career clinching point, staying composed under pressure and delivering the shot that secured the Rams' victory in a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win at the No. 4 spot. Her performance highlighted her focus and determination in a key moment for the team.
Coach Mai-Ly Tran praised the key contributors.
"I'm really proud of Leyla and Hanna, who had a huge impact in doubles and singles. They brought great energy to the team to give us the lead," Tran said. "Another big shout out to Dylan for her first clinch and showed great composure in her match.
"With this being our first doubleheader, we had our whole team step up in our match against Eastern Washington. We bounced back and came ready to play smarter tennis. I am pleased with our intention and better execution of our game plans."
Earlier in the day, the Rams battled a strong Gonzaga lineup. Doubles featured close, competitive matches, including a narrow 6–4 finish for Luana Avelar and Logan Voeks at No. 1, while singles play showcased long rallies, endurance, and fight across the lineup.
"We learned a lot from our two matches. Gonzaga came out very strong, and we were unable to adapt quickly enough in doubles," Tran said. "We made a few too many errors and needed to be a bit more disciplined to beat that team."
Across both matches, the Rams continued to show adaptability and commitment to improvement. With a roster featuring both transfers and freshmen, the day provided valuable experience in high-pressure situations and helped strengthen team chemistry.
"This win was a team effort, and we got better today," she said.
