Colorado State finishes NorCal kickoff with win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Colorado State softball team (3-2) secured a decisive 7-0 victory over the Sacramento State softball team (4-1) at Shea Stadium on Sunday morning.

Colorado State 7, Sacramento State 0

  • The Rams' offense was highlighted by two home runs and a total of 10 hits, exceeding their season average of 7.25 hits per game, while their pitching staff limited the Hornets to four hits and recorded eight strikeouts in a complete-game shutout. This also marked the second consecutive game where the Rams maintained their streak of at least six runs batted in.

  • A pivotal third inning set the stage for CSU's commanding victory. Kyra Smith delivered a crucial three-run homer to left field, bringing home Jailey Wilson and Lauren Stucky, who both reached base through a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively. This sequence broke the scoreless tie and gave CSU a 3-0 lead, which they maintained throughout the game. Smith's performance in this game was notable as she achieved a season-high of three RBI, along with a season-high of three fielding assists, and notched two hits in consecutive games.

  • CSU capitalized on Sac State's fielding error in the seventh inning to extend their lead. Clarissa Castillo reached on an error, allowing Nadia DeZeeuw to score. Subsequently, Autumn Rutherford launched a three-run homer to right field, driving in Castillo and Allyson Moody, who had singled earlier in the inning. This explosive inning cemented CSU's lead, ensuring a decisive outcome. Rutherford's contributions were significant, as she recorded a season-high two hits and achieved a season-high of three RBI.

  • Sac State had limited opportunities to respond, with their best chance coming in the fourth inning when they left two runners stranded. The Rams' defense remained steadfast, preventing any significant threats from developing and securing the shutout victory.

  • Reagan Wick delivered a commanding performance for CSU, pitching a complete game shutout against Sac State. Wick allowed only four hits over seven innings, striking out eight batters while issuing just one walk. With 93 pitches thrown, 65 were strikes, and she faced 26 batters, effectively keeping the opposition scoreless throughout the game. She finished opening weekend with a perfect 0.00 weekend ERA over 14.2 innings pitched including a no-hitter over Cal Poly on Friday and a save against UC Davis Saturday.

  • Smith recorded three RBI and hit a home run, showcasing a strong offensive presence. Rutherford also contributed significantly with three RBI and a home run, adding two hits to her impressive performance. Wick pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits and striking out eight batters over seven innings.

  • Jailey Wilson recorded two or more bases on balls in two consecutive games.

Up Next: Colorado State will be back on the road next weekend, traveling to San Diego, California for a five-game tournament co-hosted by San Diego and UC San Diego.
