Rams six-run, seventh inning comeback falls just short

FORT COLLINS – The Colorado State softball team (12-12) narrowly fell to Drake (6-13) in an extra-inning matchup Monday at Ram Field, falling 9-8 after eight innings. 
  
The Rams came from behind and rallied a six-run seventh inning to tie the game, but the Bulldogs were able to take the advantage and keep it in the top of the seventh. 
  
Drake took an early 6-2 lead in the second inning, where the score would hold until entering the sixth frame when the Bulldogs added one more insurance run. Both teams using a large majority of their pitching staff, Colorado State say the combined efforts of Giselle Bentley, Karlie Cooledge, Andrea Jaskowiak and Olivia Schmidt through the first six innings of work. 
  
In the seventh, CSU mounted a dramatic comeback while batting through the order. Lauren Stucky leadoff the inning with a double to right center followed by a Jailey Wilson single to left field, bringing Stucky home. Kyra Smith and Bradie Poteet-Herrera passed the bat with singles, while Kaylynn English's RBI single brought in another run. English and Nadia DeZeeuw executed a double steal in a first-and-third situation, with DeZeeuw scoring. 
 
After the bottom of the order for the Rams came up clutch in loading the bases back up, including station-to-station hits by Abby Edwars, Autumn Rutherford and Jac Smith, Stucky came back up to the plate for her hero's moment where she repeated what she did to start the innings, hitting a double, this time for two RBI, tying the game at eight all. 
  
Entering the eighth and international tie-breaker rules, Drake sacrifice bunted the placed run on second over to third, before scoring the runner with a sacrifice fly to right field, just nearly scoring the run with a reviewed play at the plate. Reagan Wick, the Rams' ace who entered the game in the top of the eighth, got the third out, sending the bat back to the Rams in the bottom of the eighth. While the Rams also sacrifice bunted the placed runner at second over to third base, an attempted sacrifice fly from Kaylynn English did not score Kyra Smith from third, leaving the runner stranded and Drake the 9-8 victory after eight. 
  
Stucky led the Rams offensively recording four hits and three RBI, including two doubles. Autumn Rutherford contributed with two hits and scored twice. Abby Edwards added a hit and scored once, while also getting on base with a hit-by-pitch. English also scored a run and drove in another. 
 
While Wick took the loss in the circle, bright spots from Andrea Jaskowiak and freshman Olivia Schmidt showed strong relief innings with the pitchers recording four and two strikeouts respectively. 
 
Up Next: Colorado State will finish the Rams Invitational 3-2 and look ahead to the start of Mountain West play next weekend as they travel to San Diego State for a three game series beginning Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. mountain time.
