Volleyball Wins Border War, Part One

The Colorado State volleyball team, ranked 22nd in the country, won the first installment of the Border War against rival Wyoming this evening, 30-25, 30-18, 30-20. The Rams improve to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in Mountain West Conference play while the Cowgirls fall to 13-7 on the year and 2-3 in league action.
Colorado State was led by sophomore outside hitter Tess Rogers, who tied for the ninth best hitting percentage in school history after pounding 13 kills in 16 swings with just one error for a .750 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Becky Sarauer was also in double figure kills with 12 and junior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley hit .692 (9-0-13) on the evening. Junior setter Melissa Courtney tallied a match-high eight digs and also tied her career high with five service aces in the match. Junior middle blocker Bri Frech led all players with six blocks in the three games.
?We played very mature tonight,? said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. ?Tess was unbelievable for us tonight and every one on the team passed the ball exceptionally well. We knew this was going to be a tough place to play in and we came in focused and ready.?
Wyoming was led by middle blocker Leah Powers with 10 kills and middle blocker Jill Roslund hit a team best .545 (7-1-11). Michelle Rauter had two aces to lead the team and both Sara Maytorena and Amanda Miller notched a team-high four digs. Powers and Rauter added four blocks each.
The Rams hit .396 for the match and had nine service aces, while missing just six serves. They also had seven blocks and held the Cowgirls to a .188 hitting efficiency.
The Rams scored the first four points of the match, two off blocks by Dre Downs and Frech and an ace by Courtney. Wyoming scored the next two points and would never get closer than that. The Cowgirls scored three straight from 19-14 to 19-17, but Hana Perlee missed a serve to end the run. Sarauer had six kills, while Rogers went four for four as the team hit .273 and Wyoming hit .222 behind five kills by Powers.
Courtney started off game two with an ace but then Powers got a kill to knot the score at 1-1. The Rams rattled off the next four points with one coming off an ace serve by Rogers to lead 5-1. With a 12-7 advantage, the Rams scored five straight behind the tough serving of Courtney. Frech had two kills during the stretch and Courtney had her third ace of the night. After the five point run, CSU led by 10, 17-7. Down 18-9, Rauter had back-to-back aces to pull within seven, 18-11, when Hilbert called his only timeout of the match. CSU scored four of the next five points and went on to win 30-18. Rogers added five more kills to her total in five swings to give her nine at the break. The Rams hit .455 in the second game and held the Cowgirls to .182.
The third game started the same way as the other two games, with the Rams up 4-1 after Courtney had two aces in the first four points. Trailing 19-11, Wyoming had its second three-point run of the evening, getting a kill by Roslund and an ace serve from Vanessa Latimer to pull within five, 19-14, but she missed the next serve to end the rally. Rogers and Shirley both had four kills in the last game as the Rams hit .480 in the final stanza and they held the Cowgirls to a .148.
Colorado State continues play on the road, facing New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 17 and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 18 to conclude the first half of conference action.
