Fort Collins ? Colorado State University became bowl eligible for a 10th consecutive season by virtue of a 21-6 win over San Diego State before 29,127 fans at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
Leading 7-6 on Ben Stratton?s 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, the Rams broke the game open with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.
?That was a hard-fought victory,? said Rams? coach Sonny Lubick, whose team is now 6-5 and eligible for bowl consideration. The Rams have been to four consecutive bowl games and seven in Lubick?s 10 previous seasons.
?I?m really proud of our defense. We played probably one of our best games of the year. Ben Sratton had a wonderful game. The seven points he got was huge for us.?
Colorado State limited SDSU to just a pair of field goals by J.C. Meija and 345 total yards.
Stratton picked off an errant Adam Hall pass and returned it 35 yards for a score on the first play of the second quarter. Meija?s two field goals ? one each in the second and third quarters respectively ? drew SDSU within a single point heading into the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt found wide receiver Eric Hill on a 67-yard scoring play with 9 minutes, 6 seconds to play in the game to give the Rams a 14-6 lead. Five minutes later, Jimmy Green added insurance with a 42-yard touchdown run.
Green finished the game with a team-best 69 yards. Van Pelt rushed for 49 yards and completed 11-of-19 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown.
Defensive tackle Bryan Save was impressive with a career-most 11 tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks. Benny Mastropaolo finished with nine tackles while Stratton had seven.
Colorado State plays its final regular season game of the year Nov. 22 at UNLV, then must wait for perhaps a fifth consecutive bowl invitation.
