Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Stanford in Opener

8/29/2003 12:00:00 AM | Volleyball

In the season opener for both teams, the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal volleyball team defeated the Colorado State Rams in three games, 30-22, 30-16, 30-21. The match was in the first round of the annual UPHI Classic played in Moby Arena and hosted by CSU.

Juniors Katie Jo Shirley (middle blocker) and Becky Sarauer (outside hitter) led the Rams with 12 kills each, while Shirley hit .429 (12-3-21) for the match to lead the team in hitting percentage. Junior libero Lindsey Kerr led all players with eight digs and junior middle blocker Bri Frech led the squad with three blocks.

?Despite the outcome, I thought this was a great match,? said Colorado State head coach Tom Hilbert. ?We did some really good things tonight. They (Stanford) just blocked everything.?

Stanford was led by junior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani with 16 kills, while junior outside hitter Jennifer Hucke added 10 kills for the Cardinal. Stanford recorded 24 blocks in the match, with senior middle blocker Sara McGee leading all players with 11 (1 solo, 10 assists) and senior middle blocker Jennifer Harvey added nine (3, 6) in the win. Hucke also led all players with a .467 hitting percentage (10-3-15).

?This didn?t look like the first match of the season,? said McGee. ?It looked like October volleyball. The crowd was huge, and very loud. Especially in game three when they (CSU) blocked us like four times in a row.?

Two Colorado State players saw action in their first match in the Green and Gold this evening. Both junior transfers, Frech and Kimi Foytich played in all three games. Foytich recorded five digs as she played back row for starting right side hitter, sophomore Casey Bauer.

Colorado State will face Florida A&M -- winners of its first match of the season against Bradley in three-games -- at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. Bradley and Stanford will play at noon and then the Cardinal and Florida A&M will play at 5:00 p.m. The tournament will end with the 7:00 match featuring the Rams and Braves of Bradley.

Florida A&M Sweeps Bradley in Opening Match of UPHI Classic

A solid Florida A&M attack and several costly errors led to defeat for the Bradley Volleyball team, as the Braves opened the 2003 season with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-24) loss to the Rattlers at the 18th annual University Park Holiday Inn Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Friday.

Florida A&M, which claimed the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2002, boasted a .257 attack percentage, compared to Bradley?s .050 hitting percentage, and the Braves committed 13 service errors on the night. The loss marked the third consecutive season Bradley has started the year with a loss.

"We played very tentatively,? sixth-year Bradley head coach Scott Luster said. ?We worked hard on the court but we were tight and struggled passing the ball. There were moments where we looked good, but for the most part our play was very static and unable to get into our offense at times.?

The Braves struggled early as Florida A&M took a 12-5 lead in game one, behind four kills from Adriana Kostadinova. Errors proved to be key in game one, as Bradley gave up 14 points to the Rattlers on service errors and wide attacks. Florida A&M was paced by Kostadinova, who had six kills in the opening game to lead the Rattlers to a 30-19 victory. Bradley hit -.061 in the first game, compared to Florida A&M?s .269 attack percentage.

Bradley built a 16-11 lead in game two, before Florida A&M used an 8-2 run to pull back into the game. The two teams battled back and forth, as the game was tied five times during an 11-point stretch. The Braves knotted the score at 23 after a kill from sophomore Lindsay Stalzer and a Florida A&M attack error.

The Rattlers closed out the game with a flurry, however, outscoring BU 7-2 down the stretch to take game two 30-25. Sophomore Ashley Vance helped lead the Braves? defensive efforts with six digs in game two. Bradley continued to struggle on the offensive end, managing a -.031 hitting percentage during the second game of the match.

Tied at 15 apiece in game three, Florida A&M took a 24-17 lead, as the Rattlers used a 9-2 run before freshman Kelly Niemeyer slammed home her first career kill to end the run. Kills by Stalzer and fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Brenner pulled Bradley to within three points, 27-24, before Kostadinova helped the Rattlers finish out the game with a kill and ace.

Florida A&M used a .323 attack percentage in game three to take the game 30-24 and sweep the match.

Vance had a career-high three service aces in addition to a team-best eight for the Braves in her first career start at setter. Stalzer led Bradley with eight kills and shared team-high honors with Brenner with four blocks. The Rattlers were paced by Kostadinova?s 13 kills. Andreina Ruiz added 10 kills on the night.
