Football Puts Pads On For First Time Sunday

Colorado State University?s football team will for the first time Sunday put pads on as the Rams continue preparations for the 2003 season opener Aug. 30 against Colorado at INVESCO Field at Mile High in Denver.
The workout begins at 9:30 a.m. on the practice fields south of Moby Arena.
Saturday, 11th-year coach Sonny Lubick put the team through a two-and-a-half hour practice in helmets and shoulder pads.
?I think they are excited to put full pads on,? said Lubick following Saturday?s workout.
Lubick was pleased with Saturday?s practice but said it wasn?t as sharp as the first three.
?It was good, but I think the first three practices were a little better,? he said. ?We were a little sluggish defensively. The offense was crisp most of the day.?
He also likes the work ethic his team has shown.
?I like the effort. They are trying hard. As long as you do that, we?ll do fine.?
He also said the Rams have installed nearly all of their offensive and defensive schemes through four workouts.
?We have almost the entire offense and defense already in. So the players? heads are spinning a little bit. It?s hard to click in with all of that going on.?
The Rams had a special visitor attend all of Saturday?s practice. New director of athletics Mark Driscoll - a former Rams? quarterback and coach in the 1970?s - watched from the sidelines. He was named to the post Friday and officially takes over as the director Aug. 30, the same day as the Rams? season opener with Colorado.
Lubick also said the team would hold contact to a minimum over the coming days, but is tentatively planning live drills Wednesday and again Aug. 16.
Under new NCAA guidelines, the team practices only once a day for the first five days of practice. The Rams then will hold two workouts every other day, beginning with a pair of practices Monday.
