Football Loses Heartbreaker, 28-21

Fort Collins, Colo. ? Colorado State University?s furious 4th quarter rally against visiting Utah fell one touchdown short, as the Rams dropped a heartbreaking, 28-21 decision in the team?s Mountain West Conference opener Saturday night at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
Trailing 21-7 entering the final period, the Rams tied the score with a pair of touchdowns coming within a span of 4 minutes, 27 seconds.
Quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt scored on an 8-yard run with 14 minutes, 54 seconds to play. Just more than 4 minutes later, running back Marcus Houston scored on a 3-yard run and Jeff Babcock?s pont-after tied the score with 10 minutes, 27 seconds remaining.
Colorado State seemed to be in position to win the game after gaining possession on a punt and driving to the Utes? 20-yard-line. On a 3rd down play with 1 minute, 33 seconds to play, Utah?s Arnold Parker scooped up a fumble and raced 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
?We came back strong, worked ourselves into a position to win the football game,? said Rams? coach Sonny Lubick following the game, which was played before 29,117 fans at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
?They made the play at the lend. Those things happen.?
What happened in between saw Utah take a 14-0 lead before backup quarterback Justin Holland capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with a scoring pass to wide receiver David Anderson.
After Utah scored late in the 3rd quarter to lead 21-7, the Rams stormed back to tie the game behind a solid defensive effort. Colorado State limited Utah to just 284 yards ? 111 in the 2nd half ? and just 126 rushing yards.
Defensive end Patrick Goodpaster and llinebacker Eric Pauly each had 10 tackles. It was Goodpaster?s top career effort, and he added 3 tackles for 11 yards lost and a quarterback sack.
Pauly, a 2-time all-conference performer, left the game in the 2nd half with a right knee injury and did not return.
Van Pelt finished the game by completing 14-of-19 pases for 181 yards and 2 interceptions. The Rams were victimized by 6 turnovers on the night, including 3 which resulted in Utah touchdowns.
