Along with Hall of Honor Award winner Doug Max, they will be honored during the Former Athletes Association Hall of Fame Dinner Friday night, Oct. 17 at the UPHI. The banquet begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., with the dinner at 6 p.m. For banquet reservation information, call 970-491-5067. Tickets are $40 and must be purchased in advance.
Starting Record
QB Bradlee Van Pelt has an 18-10 record as the team?s starting quarterback since taking over in the fourth game of the 2001 season. The last time that the Rams had a two-year starter returning at quarterback was 1997, when Moses Moreno led Colorado State to an 11-2 record - the only 11-win season in school history - a league title and a win over Missouri in the Holiday Bowl.
Crowd Count
Colorado State has drawn 89,338 fans to 3 home dates, a 29,774 per-game average and 99.2 percent of the stadium?s 30,000-seat capacity. Athletics department officials expect a capacity crowd for Saturday?s homecoming matchup.
Season Records
In 11 seasons as Colorado State?s head coach, Sonny Lubick?s teams have a 22-19 record (53.6 percent) in games in September. But in October and November, the Rams have proven to be nearly unbeatable. Colorado State?s record in October is 33-11 (75 percent), 22-5 (81.4 percent) in November. Combined in those 2 months, the Rams are 55-16 (77.5 percent) since 1993.
Down And Out
Colorado State?s lineup took a pair of major injury blows last week. H-Back Joel Dreessen, an all-conference selection in 2002 as a sophomore, is sidelined indefinitely by a severe lower abdominal strain. Dreessen had started 30 games in succession before missing the game with Utah. LB Eric Pauly, a 2-time All-MWC pick and 1st team Academic All-American in 2002, suffered a right knee injury and is sidelined the rest of the season. Pauly had started 31 games in a row and was named to the Dick Butkus ?watch list?. OC Mark Dreyer, who has started 29 of the team?s past 31 games, returned to the lineup after a 2-game hiatus due to an injury to his right ring finger that required surgery following the team?s win at California. K Jeff Babcock now owns the team?s longest active starting streak, 31 games in a row. Pauly?s streak will be stopped at 31 due to his knee injury.
Sack Pack
Colorado State?s defense continued its impressive performance in 2003 by limiting Utah to just 284 yards, the 3rd time in 5 games the Rams have held an opponent to less than 300 total yards. Colorado State allowed the Utes just 111 yards in the 2nd half. The Rams also netted their 14th quarterback sack of the year, by DE Patrick Goodpaster, in the game. CSU had only 18 total in 2002. Goodpaster, DT Lavell Mann and LB Eric Pauly lead the team with 3 sacks each.
Van Pelt 4-of-5
Van Pelt has thrown 9 touchdown passes in 5 games to date, including 3 each in games with Colorado and Miami. He had only 10 touchdowns total in 14 games in 2002. The Rams? game last week with Utah was the 1st time this season Van Pelt did not throw a touchdown pass.
Starters, Part II
Van Pelt is the fourth quarterback to start at least two seasons or more in coach Sonny Lubick?s 11 seasons at the helm. The previous three had a combined 31-6 record, 3 conference titles and 3 bowl games, including:
Year Quarterback Rec. Finish Bowl
2003 Bradlee Van Pelt 2-3 -- --
2000 Matt Newton 10-2 1st Liberty
1997 Moses Moreno 11-2 1st Holiday
1994 Anthoney Hill 10-2 1st Holiday
Long Distance, Part II
Through 5 games, the Rams have accounted for a number of big plays offensively, including:
Streaking Receivers
WR David Anderson and WR Chris Pittman continue to impress in 2003. Anderson caught a career-most 8 passes for 85 yards and a 4-yard touchdown against Utah. Pittman caught 8 passes for 123 yards in the game. Each of the receivers have 3 100-yard games in 5 contests in 2003. The Rams have had at least 1 100-yard receiver in all 5 games. Anderson (28-587-5) and Pittman (27-422-4) have combined for 55 receptions and 1,009 yards. The pair have accounted for 59 percent of the Rams? 93 receptions, and 67 percent of the team?s receiving yards.
Receiving Streaks
H-Back Joel Dreessen has the team?s longest active streak with at least one reception - 28 games in a row - dating back to the 2001 season. WR Chris Pittman has caught at least one pass in 19 consecutive games.
Just A Snap
Colorado State missed HB Joel Dreessen offensively but also on special teams. He has been the team?s long-snapper the past 3 seasons. In his place, walkon John Treacy handled the snapping duties flawlessly against Utah. Treacy is a redshirt junior in his 4th year as a walkon in the program. He formerly played at Denver?s Mullen High School.
Kicked Off
K Kevin Mark, a redshirt sophomore, has handled the kickoff duties for Colorado State in 2003. Mark has kicked off 26 times, and 12 have been downed for touchbacks. The opponents? average starting field position following a Mark kickoff is the 24-yard-line.
Century Celebration
WR Chris Pittman, a 3-year starter, garnered his 100th career reception in the game with Utah. Pittman needs 11 more to tie for 10th on the school?s career list.
Turnover Trouble
The Rams have been bothered by turnovers in 2003. In 5 games, the Rams have 16 ?giveaways? and 6 takeaways. Even more importantly, opponents have scored 28 points following Rams? turnovers - 21 by Utah in last week?s game. Colorado State has yet to score following an opponent turnover.
Rams 24-6
Colorado State?s game with Utah marked the 3rd time in 2003 and 30th time in Sonny Lubick?s 11 seasons the Rams have held an opponent to fewer than 300 total yards. Colorado State is 24-6 when holding an opponent below 300 yards (see list at right).
