Fort Collins - Colorado State University's football team held its second workout of preseason drills Tuesday, a two-hour session south of Moby Arena.
"It was a very spirited practice," said Rams' coach Sonny Lubick following the workout.
"I lilked the way they worked hard. We have a lot of things to work on. But they are working as hard as we'd like them to work, which is the most important thing."
Under new NCAA guidelines, the Rams will practice once a day for the first five days of practice, then alternate two-a-day workouts with single practices beginning Saturday.
The Rams, for the second day in a row, worked out in helmets. They will don shoulder pads for workouts Wednesday and Thursday, then putting on full pads for the first time Friday.
Lubick, whose team opens action Sept. 4 at Colorado (6 p.m., Fox Sports Net), praised the play of safety Ben Stratton as well as cornerback Brandon Cathy and also a pair of newcomers - Damon Morton and Robert Herbert.
Stratton led the Rams with four interceptions and was honorable mention all-conference while playing cornerback. He shifted to safety last spring.
"Ben looks good, and you can tell he feels comfortable," said Lubick. "He's intelligent. He's out there just playing football."
Cathy was a reserve last year who is battling for a starting job. He is a sophomore from Kansas City, Mo.
Morton is a freshman wide receiver from Riverside, Calif., who has been impressive through two workouts.
Herbert is a junior college transfer who played last year at Compton City College in Compton, Calif. A cornerback, he has caught Lubick's attention through two workouts as well.
