Fort Collins - A mixture of veteran player leadership combined with talented newcomers has brought a spirited enthusiasm to the first three days of Colorado State University's preseason football practice.

"I think this team will play hard," said Rams' coach Sonny Lubick following a two-hour workout Wednesday morning, the team's third day of practice.

"Now, we'll see if we can keep their enthusiasm."

Lubick is hopeful the enthusiasm he's seen the first three days continues. He pointed to veteran leadership by senior H-back Joel Dreessen, junior wide receiver David Anderson, junior quarterback Justin Holland, along with junior safety Ben Stratton and senior defensive end Patrick Goodpaster as critical to the development of the team.

"Those are guys you can count on for leadership," Lubick said. "They are solid.?

Lubick said while the veterans have met his expectations, a number of newcomers continue to perform well.

"We have a solid group of young receivers. I know that last year we felt good about the young guys, but the young receivers who came in now seem to be as good as we've had here."

Lubick said he and his staff have installed about half of the team's offensive and defensive schemes through three days of workouts.

"They seem to be catching on well. Usually by now, their heads are swimming, but that's not the case," he said.

Overall, he's pleased with the development of his team through three workouts.

"We have a lot of competition for a lot of spots," he said.

Under NCAA guidelines, the Rams will practice once daily through Friday. Then beginning Saturday, they will alternate two-a-day sessions with single sessions through Aug. 21.

Wednesday, the team practiced in shoulder pads for the first day, and will do the same Thursday. The first two workouts included only helmets. The Rams put full pads on for the first time for Friday morning's workout.
