Simon Says

Fort Collins - For four years, Colorado State University defensive tackle Jonathan Simon has paid his dues.
Rams' coach Sonny Lubick figures it's now time for Simon, a native of Watauga, Tex., to collect on his investment.
"Jon Simon has been a champion," said Lubick of the six-foot-six inch, 285-pound senior. "He has been a guy who has really paid his dues. He has worked hard, but always seemed to have a guy ahead of him."
That isn't the case in 2004, as Simon figures to be a starting defensive tackle. A year ago, he played behind Bryan Save, who earned all-conference honors, and in the past also saw duty at defensive end.
"He had the best summer workouts he's ever had," noted Lubick.
Lubick said Simon's work in the offeseason has been transformed into better performance on the field. Lubick also said student-athletes who patiently wait their turns for a spot in the lineup reap the rewards of playing time.
"Sometimes these guys who pay their dues and keep working, then the coach looks around and knows he has something special."
Simon drew Lubick's praise following a two-hour workout Monday morning in full pads. The Rams then returned to the practice field for an afternoon session, and will practice once Tuesday.
Lubick said he's looking for mental toughness from his team as practices are now in the second full week.
"Everyone wants to practice hard the first three or four days," Lubick said. "I want to see those guys after seven or eight practices. That's when you see who are your mentally tough guys."
Following a single practice Tuesday, the Rams will stage two workouts Wednesday, a single practice Thursday, two workouts Friday, and a single session Saturday.
Classes on the CSU campus begin Monday, Aug. 23 as the Rams continue preparations for the Sept. 4 season-opener at Colorado. Game time is 6 p.m. at Folsom Stadium. The game will be shown live nationally by Fox Sports Network, and broadcast live by the Colorado State Sports Network.
