Volleyball Defeats Washington State In Four Games

Pullman, Wash. -- Winning their second match in as many nights, the 10th ranked Colorado State volleyball team defeated Washington State in four games, 23-30, 30-15, 30-26, 30-23 to improve to 4-1 on the season. Washington State falls to 0-4 in its season home opener.

Senior middle blocker Katie Jo Shirley-Cahoon led the Rams with 17 kills and a .414 hitting percentage, while junior outside hitter Casey Bauer came off the bench to contribute 12 kills and both junior outside hitter Tess Rogers and senior middle blocker Bri Frech chipped in 11 kills each. Sophomore libero Kristen Karlik recorded a career-high 17 digs to lead all players and Frech led the team for the second straight night in blocks, tallying five. Cahoon also led all players in the match with four aces.

Colorado State hit .287 for the match with 68 kills and the Rams recorded a season-high 11 aces and matched that total in blocks. The team also combined for 59 digs. Washington State hit .165 in the match with 47 kills, eight aces and eight blocks to go along with 47 digs. Washington State?s Kelly Rosin led the Cougars with 17 kills and Jennifer Todd added 11. Liz Spear led the Cougars with a .429 hitting percentage (6-0-14). Rosin also added three aces and libero Stacey Holbrook led the team with 15 digs and Spear had four blocks to lead the squad.

Frech started the match with an ace serve, but WSU responded with a kill to tie the score at 1-1. Cahoon then blistered a kill for the 2-1 lead when the Cougars with four straight points for the 5-2 advantage. The Rams scored three of the next four points, including an ace to close within one, 6-5. After a kill by Spear for WSU, the Rams got a kill from Courtney and then a block by Frech and senior outside hitter Becky Sarauer to tie the score at 7-7. The Rams committed two errors to give the Cougars the lead, but then WSU had two errors of its own to tie the score for the fourth time at 9-9. After trading points to tie the score at 10-10, Washington State scored five of the next six points to take the 15-11 lead. Cahoon recorded the next two kills and then a WSU error closed the Rams within one, 15-14 and then Cahoon had a hitting error for the 16-14 WSU lead. The Rams tied the score off an ace by Cahoon and then tied it again at 17-17 off a kill by Sarauer. Washington State scored six of the next eight points with kills by Karlik and Downs and head coach Tom Hilbert called a timeout. WSU responded with an ace out of the break and then Bauer stopped the run for the 24-20 WSU lead. The Cougars stretched the lead to 29-21 and staved off a game loss twice before falling 30-23.

In the second game, Cahoon started with a kill for the Rams and then the score was tied at 1-1 after Frech was called in the net on a block. Behind jump serving from Courtney the Rams scored the next three points, with two kills from Frech. After a Washington State block, the Rams rattled off five of the next six points to lead 9-3 and WSU called its first timeout. Spear got another WSU kill to stop the run but then Cahoon notched the next two kills for the 11-4 lead. The Rams continued to stretch the lead, taking an eight point lead at 15-7. The teams traded points until the score was 19-12 when the Rams had two errors and WSU pulled within five, 19-14. After Bauer got a kill and then Todd got a kill for WSU, Cahoon got a kill for the 21-15 lead. She then stepped back to serve and finished the game, serving nine straight to give the Rams the 30-15 win.

After the long break, Washington State came out and scored the first two points of the third game, but the Rams then scored two straight for the first tie at 2-2. It was again tied at 3-3 when the Cougars scored the next six to take a 9-3 lead. Rogers got a CSU kill to start a trading point rally until 14-8 when Nicole Martin got a WSU ace serve for the largest advantage of the night for the Cougars -- seven points -- at 15-8. The two teams again traded points until 20-13 when the Rams scored three straight, including two kills by Rogers to close within four, 20-16 and force WSU into a timeout. At 22-16 Rogers got a kill that started a huge run for the Rams. Karlik served six straight points, including an ace and two kills by Bauer an then Frech served four straight points with an ace serve to take the 27-23 lead and they would go on to win 30-26.

The fourth game started with three straight WSU points but the Rams battled back to knot the score at 5-5 with another ace by Karlik. The score was again tied at six and seven before the Rams went on a four point run behind the tough jump serving of Katherine Whitney for the 11-7 advantage. After trading points the Rams scored five straight behind Cahoon?s serving to stretch the lead to 17-9. The Rams committed three straight errors to make the score 17-12 when Hilbert called a timeout. The teams traded points throughout the rest of the game and the Rams would win 30-23.

Colorado State will close out this road trip with a match against Gonzaga in Spokane tomorrow night. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Pacific/8:00 Mountain. The Rams then return home to host the University Park Holiday Inn Classic starting on Thursday. The tournament starts at 5:00 with Pepperdine and Southern Miss and then the Rams will face Ohio.
