Football Hosts Annual Media Day

A year ago, Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick looked out at his 100-member team and noticed how many young, new faces dotted the lineup.

Things have changed in a year.

Tuesday, Lubick and his staff and team welcomed regional media members to the field that bears his name at Hughes Stadium for annual media day activities.

Speaking to the media following various photo opportunities, Lubick recognizes those same faces who are now a year older and more experienced.

"We have as much experience as I can remember," Lubick said. "It has allowed us tomove along at a faster pace."

Unlike past years where media day served as the official kickoff for preseason workouts, Tuesday's event came five days after the team began workouts. That has given Lubick and his staff time to evaluate the team before addressing the media en masse.

"We're putting our schemes in, and they undertand it on both sides. Overall, after five practices, I like the work ethic," he said.

The Rams have had only two injuries - both minor - since practice began. Defensive end Terrance Carter is expected back after suffering a minor concussion last Sunday. Defensive end Matt Rupp - Carter's immediate replacement - left Monday's workout with a sore hamstring, and is out indefinitely.

Lubick is optimistic entering the 2005 season, which opens Sept. 3 with the annual battle against in-state rival Colorado in Boulder (1:30 p.m. MT, TBS and the Colorado State Sports Network).

"We have a chance to be a good football team. We've got experience. I'd like to think we can get things done."

Lubick said the team has focused since last spring on improving the running game both offensively and defensively.

The Rams will not practice Tuesday afternoon, then practice twice Wednesday, a single time Thursday, twice Friday, then once Saturday.

Tickets to all five of CSU's home games in 2005 - including dates with Front Range rivals Air Force and Wyoming, along with Utah, San Diego State, and Nevada, are on sale by calling 1-800-491-RAMS, or online at CSURAMS.com. Single-game tickets are also available at all King Soopers and City Market grocery store locations throughout the state of Colorado.

Colorado State opens the home schedule Sept. 24, playing host to the University of Nevada in the newly-renovated Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. Game time is 4 p.m.
