Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick gets his first look at his team in full gear Monday, when the Rams don pads for the first time during preseason workouts.
Lubick, who is in his 13th year at the helm, put his team through a two-hour workout Sunday.
"We will do some live hitting Monday. You have to practice hard, and get some live work done," said Lubick.
He said Sunday's practice was solid, but players were a bit sluggish.
"We were a touch sluggish. Nothing real bad," said Lubick. "You always battle that. It's a matter mentally. We have to continue to work hard."
Lubick also said hotter weather both Saturday and Sunday were good for his team. The first two days of workouts were under cloudy, cool conditions.
"The heat is good for us. We need to be tough and battle through it," said Lubick.
Lubick said returning quarterback Justin Holland, who threw for more than 1,600 yards before being injured midway through last season, has looked good thus far.
"Justin has looked very good most of the time," said Lubick.
He also said the top two backups - Caleb Hanie and Billy Farris - are competing hard behind Holland. Lubick said all three quarterbacks need to be ready to play in the event of an injury. Lubick praised Hanie's play through the first four practices of the preseason.
He also said defensive end Terrance Carter, who sustained a minor concussion late in Saturday's workout and left the field, will be sidelined for a few days. Once he is cleared by team physicians he will return to practice, Lubick said.
Following Monday's workout, the Rams will host Media Day activities at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium Tuesday morning, then return to the field Wednesday for two workouts. The team, under NCAA guidelines, must conduct only one workout per day until Aug. 10. The Rams can then alternate two-a-day workouts with single practice sessions. in shorts and helmets.
