Fourteen hours after completing the first football practice in preparation for the 2005 season, Colorado State University's 110-player roster was back on the field Friday morning for a two-hour workout.
Veteran coach Sonny Lubick said it's evident through two workouts the Rams are much more experienced than a year ago.
"Guys have a little feel for what they are doing, so they look a lot quicker," he said.
A year ago, the Rams had only 12 seniors on the roster. The depth was dominated by first- and second-year players. That's not the case in 2005. Lubick said the experience of a year ago is evident.
"We like them to play with confidence, play within our schemes."
Lubick said there are looming battles in the secondary and wide receiver, as well as runningback, where the Rams appear to have increased depth over a year ago.
"At wide receiver we have four or five players who played a lot last year. I think we have depth at runningback, and we have more players in the secondary who played last year," he said.
Lubick also said the Rams continue to put emphasis on special teams play.
"We spend quality time every day. We're emphasizing it probably more time than we spent last year," Lubick said. "We have a lot of guys who played on special teams last year. That will help."
Lubick is also looking for more consistency by this year's squad.
"As long as we continue to work hard, and work on being consistent, that's important. All it takes is one guy not to do his job, and that hurts you. That's what we got bogged down with last year."
Colorado State returns to the practice field Saturday morning for a 9 a.m. workout. The team, under NCAA guidelines, must conduct only one workout per day until Aug. 10. The Rams can then alternate two-a-day workouts with single practice sessions. The first two days of workouts were in shorts and helmets. Players will wear shoulder pads beginning Saturday, and the first day of full-contact work is scheduled Monday.
Colorado State opens the season Sept. 3 against the University of Colorado in Boulder.
