Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick had his team's attention during a two-hour workout Wednesday morning, one day prior to the veteran coach giving his team a day off.
Lubick, in his 13th year at the helm, put the Rams through a 30-minute full-contact session to end the morning workout. The Rams were scheduled to return to the field for another afternoon session. The later workout will not be in full pads, and Lubick will give his team Thursday off.
"We had more contact than usual," said Lubick. "We had a good 30 minutes of all-out contact. I thought guys ran to the football defensively well. The defense had a touch of an upper hand, but the offense did well, too."
Lubick said one of the goals of the contact session was to continue to sort out the team's runningback position, where returning starter Jimmy Green, sophomore Kyle Bell, and transfer Nnamdi Ohaeri are battling for the top spot.
Terrance Carter, a projected starter at defensive end, did not participate while recovering from a concussion. His top backup, Matt Rupp, has been absent for more than a week with a hamstring injury. Their absence has opened the door for sophomore Bob Vomhof and redshirt freshman Tommy Hill.
"Those young defensive ends are starting to come along," said Lubick. "They are showing us good signs, good life. They are getting their chances to make plays. They are still a little cautious, but both can be excellent football players. You won't recruit better looking guys. Now they have to go out and play."
Linebacker Jahmal Hall remains sidelined after suffering a neck stinger in last Saturday's scrimmage. Center Albert Bimper has missed the last two days with a minor knee injury, and tight end Matt Bartz has seen only limited duty while still recovering from an off-season knee injury.
Following Thursday's off day, the Rams return to practice for two workouts Friday, at 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., then have a Saturday morning workout at 9 a.m., that will include what Lubick estimates will be a 100-play scrimmage. He hopes to devote 35 plays each to the top two offensive and defensive units and the remainder to other reserves.
