Colorado State University's football team opens its season in 10 days, playing against in-state rival Colorado in Boulder Sept. 3.

But another opener is set to take place when the Rams play host to the University of Nevada Sept. 24: The grand reopening of Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.

Construction crews are continuing work on $15.2 million in renovations and expansion made possible by a gift presented to the university in May of 2003 by the Bohemian Foundation.

A year ago, more than 4,000 permanent seats were installed in the north end zone, along with two new scoreboards and a video board.

By the time the Rams play their season opener, a renovated press box, 12 luxury suites, and an expanded club seating area will be completed.

That phase of the project began immediately following the conclusion of the 2004 season, said Doug Max, associate athletic director who is overseeing the project which is under the supervision of Turner Construction.

Construction crews are currently installing carpet, countertops and putting the finishing touches on the project in time for the Ram Fan Fest Sept. 17.

That day, from 9-11 a.m., the athletic department is sponsoring a free open house for Ram fans, including a free pancake breakfast staged by the Spirit Committee of the Ram Club. The pancake breakfast will take place in the Ram Zone tent southeast of the team tunnel entrance.

The first 2,000 fans will receive a free gift bag.

The open house will include tours of the renovated stadium, and a "passport contest." Fans can visit seven different areas of the stadium and collect a passport stamp to be eligible to win a grand prize that includes airfare, game tickets and lodging for CSU's road game Nov. 19 against UNLV.

KCOL radio, 600 AM, will originate its morning show, "Mornings with Keith and Gail," with Keith Weinman and Gail Fallen, from the stadium.

Updated photos of the stadium renovation will be available at CSURAMS.com.
