The Colorado State Rams cross country teams are preparing for their first meet this season on Friday at the Wyoming Invitational. The women's team is heading north with the hopes of defending last year's victory, while the men are trying to regain the title.
Last year the women had five runners in the top-25 with junior Danielle Korb taking first and the men placed six runners in the top-10 with Josh Glaab taking 2nd place.
This year the Wyoming Invite will be host to teams from Air Force and Iowa State, along with several Division II schools.
"We are really tired physically and we should be. Both teams have not taken a day off in three weeks," said Head Coach Del Hessel. "We have no intention of slowing down our training at this point in the season. It is important for us to keep up the long continuous mileage with the men hitting 100 miles a week and the women hitting 60 miles."
Coach Hessel has nothing but high hopes for this first meet. "I try not to coach much the first meet of the season. I like to see who shows up. It gives me a chance to see who they are, and what their instincts are. After I see what they can do then I'll be more instructive."
In the past years, the Rams have let their top runners sit out the first meet but Hessel has every intention of running all of his athletes. "I want to get the whole team involved early. We can practice teamwork and competitive energy. It will help us prepare for Notre Dame."
Next week the Rams head to Albuquerque, New Mexico then have three weeks off before heading to the Notre Dame Invitational on October 1.
