Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick said he thinks the Rams' opponent Saturday in Fort Collins - BYU - is worthy of a top 25 ranking.
"They are easily a top 20 football team," Lubick said Monday during his weekly news conference. "They could have easily won both those games," he said of early-season losses on the road at Arizona and Boston College.
The Rams must contend with the Cougars, who stand alone atop the Mountain West Conference standings. BYU is 6-2 overall, 4-0 in the conference and the Cougars have won five in a row.
"They are the most balanced offense we've seen. These guys moved the ball against Boston College and Arizona. They will be a handful to contain," Lubick said.
CSU enters the game 4-4, 1-3 including a 20-19 loss to New Mexico when Lobos' kicker Kenny Byrd made a 35-yard field goal as time expired. Lubick said a heartbreaking loss like that should have no impact on his team for this week's game with BYU.
"The next game is the most important. You go out and play as hard as you can," he said. "They (CSU) will play the same way they have been: They will play hard."
During the game, CSU officials will also honor six inductees into the school's hall of fame. Bryan Berryhill (track), Ivan Dyekman (track), Angela Knopf (volleyball), Mark Mullaney (football), and CSU volleyball coach Tom Hilbert are this year's honorees. The group will be honored Friday night at the school's annual hall of fame banquet. They will be introduced to the crowd Saturday at halftime.
Also, CSU will recognize members of the school's 1966 football team that finished with a 7-3 record, as well as members of the 1995 squad that won the conference title and played Kansas State in the Holiday Bowl.
Saturday's game begins at 4:30 p.m., and will be broadcast on the Colorado State Sports Network (KCOL, 600 AM-Fort Collins, ESPN Radio, 560 AM-Denver). It will also be shown regionally by the mtn.
