Fort Collins - Runningback Kyle Bell and projected starting quarterback Caleb Hanie highlight the Gold team roster for Colorado State University's intrasquad spring game Saturday in Fort Collins.
Head coach Sonny Lubick and his staff announced the roster split today, two days before Colorado State concludes spring drills with an 11 a.m. game at French Field at Rocky Mountain High in Fort Collins. The school is located at the intersection of Shields and Swallow. The Rams are playing at the facility while the turf at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium is being replaced with a new artificial surface.
Hanie, who started five games as a true freshman in 2004, figures to lead the Rams' offense in 2006. Behind him, he'll have Bell, a junior from Keenesburg, Colo., who rushed for 1,288 yards last season, second in the league and 22nd nationally. He also scored 10 touchdowns. In addition to Bell and Hanie, senior Dustin Osborn heads the Gold's receiving corps. Osborn is a two-year starter and former walkon from La Junta, Colo. Senior Josh Day, honorable mention all-league last year, anchors the offensive line.
Defensively, the Gold squad is led by linebacker Jeff Horinek, a sophomore who started 10 of the team's 12 games last season. Brandon Cathy and Klint Kubiak both saw extensive duty in the secondary last season and on special teams. Jimmie Kaylor, a first-team all-conference pick a year ago, is also on the Gold squad.
Billy Farris, Hanie's likely backup, is the Green team quarterback. One of his favorite passing targets figures to be Johnny Walker, a junior who was third on the team in receiving a year ago, along with George Hill. Both receivers have had solid springs. Senior Clint Oldenburg, a two-year starter in the offensive line, leads that group in protecting Hanie.
Defensively, two-year starting end Jesse Nading leads the way. Nading led the team in sacks last year and is already earning preseason recognition.
Defensive coordinator Steve Stanard is the Gold team's head coach, and willb e joined by assistants Darrell Funk, Dave Arnold, Karl Ballard, and James Ward. Offensive coordinator Dan Hammerschmidt will guide the Green team. He will be assisted by Marc Lubick, Mick Delaney, and Jesse Williams.
Lubick, in his 14th year at the helm, will help on both sidelines during Saturday's game.
The game begins at 11 a.m., following a free pancake breakfast sponsored by CSU's Spirit Committee on the west side of the playing facility. The breakfast is from 9-11 a.m. There is no admission fee for the game. The game will also be broadcast by KCOL Radio, 600AM in Fort Collins. Rich Bircumshaw will call the play-by-play, Erik Olson adds commentary, and Brian Roth is the sideline reporter.
