Rams split double header with North Dakota State

The Colorado State University softball team (24-20, 4-10 MWC) split a double header with the North Dakota State Bison (22-27) on Wednesday afternoon at Ram Field. The Rams dominated in game one, posting a 15-0 victory in five innings, but lost game two, 2-3, in the 12 innings.
In the first game, the Rams' offense exploded for 15 runs. Junior Jessica Strickland and sophomore Lauren Cusick led the team, each hitting a home run in a nine-run fourth inning and recording three RBI. Sophomore Julia Kloppe posted a 3-for-3 performance, scoring twice. Five Rams tallied multiple hit games. Senior Tara Harbert and Strickland each posted 3-for-4 days from the plate and freshman Jenna Wisely was 2-for-3. The victory was the Rams' tenth shutout of the season.
Junior Jessica Strickland picked up the win for the Rams, improving to 10-13 on the season. She pitched the first 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two batters. Freshman MaryBeth Culp pitched 1.0 innings in relief of Strickland, allowing no hits.
In the second game, North Dakota State jumped to an early 1-0 lead, getting a run from sophomore Bekki Rasmussen in the second inning. The Bison scored again in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-0 advantage.
The Rams answered with a two-run home run by senior Rachelle Padeway to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and send it to extra innings. The game remained tied at two for until the 12th inning when junior Grete Peterson scored to end tto give the Bison a 3-2 lead. The Rams were unable to pull off a second comeback in the bottom half of the inning, as Padeway Harbert and Strickland were retired in order to end the game.
Freshman Kim Klabough pitched the first 5.0 innings for the Rams before getting relief from Strickland. Klabough allowed one run on five hits and struck out three batters. Strickland pitched 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. Strickland picked up the loss, falling to 10-14 on the season.
The Rams will travel to Utah to face the BYU Cougars and the Utah Utes in conference double headers on April 28 and April 29. The first games are set to begin at 5 p.m. MT and 2 p.m. MT, respectively.
