Colorado State University's football team returned to the practice field Monday for a two-hour workout following the first day of classes on campus.
"I thought practice went okay with a day off in there," said Rams' coach Sonny Lubick of the Monday session.
Lubick had put his team through a 101-play scrimmage last Saturday at Hughes Stadium, then gave the team a day off Sunday.
"We did some 'scout' work and get a little touch of it," he said as the team began preparations for its first game Sept. 2 against Weber State.
"We did 15-to-20 minutes tonight, and we will do 15-to-20 minutes tomorrow. We'll still do quite a few things against one another."
Lubick said he's pleased with the progress of the defense, especially against the rushing game, after evaluating videotape of last week's scrimmage.
"I believe the run game is a lot better. But we still have to stop big plays. The discipline of the defense is much better. But we have to figure out how to stop runs on the perimeter and the quick passes."
Lubick will join his CU coaching counterpart, Dan Hawkins, at a luncheon in Denver Tuesday sponsored by the Metro Denver Sports Commission. Both will provide comments about the upcoming season as well as the game Sept. 9.
Tickets to the game in Denver, as well as all CSU athletic events, are available online at CSURAMS.com.
Several players who missed last Saturday's scrimmage with injuries returned to practice, including safety Ben Stratton (left knee), defensive back Nnamdi Ohaeri (left ankle), defensive tackle Matt Rupp (right hamstring), and linebacker Nathan Pauly (left shoulder), were all back in practice. Wide receiver George Hill (right knee) remains sidelined. Linebacker Jake Pottorff (right shoulder) did limited noncontact work.
