Colorado State University's football team put on shoulder pads for the first time during preseason drills Saturday during a two-hour workout.
The Rams' first two workouts were conducted in shorts and helmets, and Saturday the team added shoulder pads. CSU will return to the practice field Sunday at 9 a.m. for its fourth practice of the fall. The Rams will practice again Monday, then take Tuesday off from workouts for media day activities at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium at 10 a.m.
"We came out and had good energy," said Rams' coach Sonny Lubick. "It was the first day in shoulder pads. Both sides had some real bright spots."
Lubick said the biggest thing he'd like to see from his team on a daily basis is consistency.
"Every coach in the country looks for the same thing at this time of year. You would like to see some consistency."
Lubick said he's hopeful the Rams can develop depth at all three linebacker positions.
"Hopefully we can go into the season with six linebackers," he said. "We've got some possibilities."
The Rams return three players who have considerable time as starters: Jeff Horinek in the middle, flanked by Jon Radford and Luke Adkins. While Lubick knows those three lead the battle for starting positions, backups will play a key role for the Rams.
Junior Nathan Pauly along with redshirt freshmen Sedric Patterson and Jake Potorff are presently the top backups.
Pauly has played all three positions. Potorff, Lubick said, continues to impress after a solid spring showing.
Colorado State opens the season Sept. 2, playing host to Weber State at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. Kickoff time is 3 p.m.
