Rams in Pads for First Time

Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick said Monday he's pleased with his team's first five days of preseason workouts.
Monday, Lubick put the team through a two-hour workout in pads, the first time in 2006 the Rams have had on full gear. The Rams will take a day off Tuesday to participate in media day activities at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium at 10 a.m., then return to the field Wednesday.
Lubick has two practices slated for Wednesday, 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., then a single practice Thursday. The team will practice twice Friday, then a single time Saturday.
"We've had a good five days," said Lubick. "I'm pleased with the way we've progressed. The players are working hard and playing hard.
A lot of that is due to players making up their minds to be as good as they can be, and we have competition in several areas. The energy has been good. I like the effort. They feel the competition, and they are working hard."
He also said the off day comes at an opportune time.
"It's a good day (Tuesday) to have off. It will let them rest and get ready for two practices Wednesday."
Lubick said at least 80 percent of his team's offense, defense, and special teams plans have been installed.
"Now it's important to go back and refine what we have in," Lubick said.
Lubick said his team will have a short period of live contact either Wednesday or Thursday, then again Saturday.
The 14th-year coach also said offensive lineman Marvin Arnold has been impressive to date. Arnold is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound junior college transfer from Carson, Calif., who earned postseason honors last year at El Camino Junior College.
"Marvin Arnold has met all expectations," said Lubick. "He's made a move. He is definitely in our top six, for sure. What that does is give us depth and flexibility."
Colorado State opens the 2006 season by playing host to Weber State Sept. 2. Kickoff time is 3 p.m. at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium.
