Six days into preseason workouts, Colorado State University football coach Sonny Lubick threw a few new wrinkles at his team during Wednesday's morning workout, the first of two on the day for the Rams.
"We did some new stuff, and worked in the 'red zone' quite a bit," said Lubick following a two-hour morning workout in full pads. "It makes it a little tougher on the players when you add the new stuff."
The Rams were set to return to the field in helmets for an afternoon workout scheduled for 90 minutes.
Following Wednesday's double session CSU is scheduled for a single workout Thursday morning, followed by two workouts Friday. Lubick said the Rams may do some situational scrimmage work Thursday.
He also said the Rams will have a situational scrimmage Saturday morning.
Lubick, entering his 14th year as the Rams' head coach, praised the play of CSU's linebacking corps, including Jeff Horinek.
A starter at one outside spot last season, Horinek moved to the middle during the spring and has responded well.
"He has really taken hold of the middle linebacker position," Lubick said. "He playing faster and quicker."
Lubick said the Rams' linebackers could be a team strength in 2006.
"We have three guys who have started," he said, mentioning Jon Radford and Luke Adkins, a pair of seniors who have been starters in the past. Radford was in the lineup most of 2006, while Adkins was a starter in 2005 but battled a nagging knee injury early last season.
"When you add (Jake) Potorff and Nathan Pauly, we could be as good as any linebacker group in our conference."
Lubick also praised the team's kickers.
"To this point, our kicking has been excellent. For the past two days, Jason Smith has hit everything right through the middle," he said of the Rams' returning placekicker. "And Jimmie (Kaylor) has been punting very well."
Colorado State opens the 2006 season playing host to Weber State Sept. 2 at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium. Kickoff time is 3 p.m. tickets are available online at CSURAMS.com
Lubick will join fellow CSU coaches Bryan Berryhill and Tom Hilbert as well as athletic director Paul Kowalczyk Thursday for the third annual Fort Collins Chamber of Commerce Kickoff Luncheon. Berryhill, a former All-American in track at CSU, is the Rams' first-year cross country coach while Hilbert is the school's veteran volleyball coach.
Each of the three coaches will provide a 2006 season preview, and Kowalczyk will speak about the upcoming year at CSU.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 at the Hilton of Fort Collins, 425 W. Prospect.
