FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Rams won. Colorado State volleyball hosted its first alumnae match Friday night during CSU's Homecoming weekend. While the 2007 team scored the most points it was the program that won. Joining Mekana Barnes and Jaime Strauss were Allie Peckham and Angela Knopf much to the delight of the fans.
In the first match of the night the alumnae from 1998 or earlier featured Angie Duryea (Knox) who holds multiple Ram records. Duryea had four kills on 20 attempts. Catie Vager led the alums with six kills. For the current Rams Tessa Nelson had 11 kills. Rainie Rogers-Carson and Melanie Williams had three kills each. Jonelle Wallace added seven kills for the current Rams.
The highlight of the evening came as the graduates from 1999 or later hit the court. Bri Frech, drawing on her knowledge of the current CSU players from the bench where she serves as the statistical coordinator, led the former Ram team with eight kills. Knopf, who plays on the AVP tour, traded the sand for the hard court and finished with six kills, seven digs and one block. Barnes, playing opposite Knopf, had seven kills, five blocks and a pair of digs. Barnes and Knopf are statically mirrors of one another in the CSU history book despite the very different styles in the middle. Ashley Fornstrom had 26 assists, one more than Ali Peckham for the alumnae. Krista Swarztendruber-Wilper notched five kills. Vager played in the second match as well finishing with six kills. Summer Jennings, who traveled the furthest coming from Honolulu, had four kills. Defensively the Kerr sisters, Kelly and Lindsey, combined for five digs.
More than 30 alumnae returned to Moby Arena for the event. At a reception following the match the alumnae had an opportunity to mingle and socialize with the current team and other alumnae. The weekend continues with a tailgate before tomorrow's football game and alumnae vs. alumnae match.
