Softball Sweeps Day Two of Capital Classic

The Colorado State softball team (20-13) picked up two victories on day two of the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. The Rams defeated Minnesota, 1-0, followed by a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly.

In game one, pitcher Rebecca Penland held the Minnesota offense to just two hits, whiles striking out 10 batters as the Rams pulled out the 1-0 victory. Freshman Allison Majam scored on a wild pitch by Golden Gophers hurler Briana Hassett, which proved to be the game winner.

Penland improved to 4-2 on the season with the win for the Rams.

Colorado State then picked up another shutout victory in their second game of the day. The Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top top of the first when Majam sineld up the middle to score junior Lauren Cusick who led of the inning with a single through the left side.

The Rams added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning when senior Jessica Strickland singled up the middle to score Cusick for the second time in the game.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Klabough picked up the win for the Rams, allowing just three hits, while striking out four batters.

"Rebecca (Penland) and Kim (Klabough) gave us outstanding outings and it was huge for us to get two shutout victories over some quality opponents in Minnesota and Cal Poly," said head coach Mary Yori.

The Rams will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow when they face Kansas to close out the Capital Classic. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. PT/ 12 p.m. MT.
