Barnes leads the MWC in hitting percentage

Mekana Barnes repeats as Mountain West Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -¬ Colorado State junior middle blocker Mekana Barnes has earned Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and the second time in her career.

Barnes was named the Hilton Classic Tournament MVP after leading all players in hitting percentage (.544), kills (52) and blocks (21) in three matches played. She led the Rams to their second straight tournament title with wins over Colorado, Miami (Ohio) and Winthrop.

In the opener vs. Colorado, she tallied 17 kills, eight blocks and three digs in Colorado State's 3-0 sweep. Barnes followed with 20 kills, five blocks, two aces and one dig in a five-game win over Miami (Ohio) and concluded the tournament with 15 kills, eight blocks, two aces and two digs in a 3-1 win against Winthrop.

For the week, Barnes averaged 4.33 kills, 1.75 blocks, 0.67 digs and 5.67 points per game, while hitting .544 in 12 games played.

The Rams open Mountain West Conference action Sept. 12 with a 7 p.m. match against TCU.
