FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Rams won their second match of the Hilton Classic in dramatic fashion, coming back from being down 2-1 to win the match 3-2 (30-16,28-30,28-30,31-29, 15-10)Friday night. Tonya Mokelki finished with 17 kills on .419 hitting while Mekana Barnes notched 20 kills hitting .500. Barnes' hitting was the fourth consecutive match above .500 this season.
Game 1 was a quick show of offensive prowess by the Rams (4-3). At the end of the first game CSU had three players with perfect attack percentages. Barnes led the way with five kills, Tessa Nelson added three and Jacqueline Davisson had one. The Rams hit .429 in the game, a season high, and finished with 15 team kills.
In the second game the RedHawks (2-4) came alive, surprising the Rams with a 30-28 win. CSU hit just .302 and doubled their attack errors from Game 1. Mokelki hit an impressive .700 with 7 kills and Ashley Fornstrom had 16 assists. CSU committed four service errors in the game but held the net with four blocks.
The Rams rallied from down four in the third game to get to 27-28 before MU's impressive defense forced a pair of hitting errors for the Game 3 win. CSU's offensive woes hit bottom as they hit .073 for the game and committed 12 errors on 41 attempts.
Reminiscent of the third game against Pacific earlier this season, CSU rebounded for the Game 4 win with an unprecedented 26 kills in the match. The Rams' kills and the four attack errors for the RedHawks were the total points scored. Barnes had eight kills and Amanda Fahnestock came alive for six kills and five digs. Katelin Batten backed up the hitters with 13 of her 28 digs.
The Rams finished the match closer to where they started getting the 15-10 win on .286 hitting with 10 kills. Nelson, who had been quiet since game one, hit 1.000 with four kills in Game 5. Batten added five key digs.
CSU went for the 1-2-3 play (dig by Strauss, set by Fornstrom and attack by Barnes) four times in the match. The Rams are now 4-0 when Barnes hits .500 or better. The Rams look to extend their four-match win streak as they play for the Hilton Classic title tomorrow as they face Winthrop at 7 p.m. Earlier today, Colorado defeated Winthrop in three games.
