This week’s notable storylines…
- Both Air Force and CSU had legendary head coaches lead their respective programs to new heights before tapping the NFL to hire a former player & assistant coach from their history. Troy Calhoun played and coached at Air Force before the Falcons hired him from the Houston Texans to replace Fisher DeBerry. Steve Fairchild played and coached at Colorado State before the Rams hired him from the Buffalo Bills to replace Sonny Lubick.
- CSU bids to return the Ram-Falcon Trophy back to Fort Collins for the first time since 2005, the last time CSU defeated Air Force — a 41-23 trimph in Fort Collins on a Thursday night ESPN telecast.
- Things don’t get any easier for the Rams, who’ve met two nationally ranked opponents over their last three games. Hoping for a bowl berth, CSU’s three remaining opponents (Air Force, New Mexico and Wyoming) went 2-1 this weekend, combining to outscore their opposition, 64-27. The only loss among the group was New Mexico’s 13-10 decision vs. Utah, now No. 8 in the BCS standings. Each of the Rams’ final two road trips, however, are bus rides to Colorado Springs and Laramie.
- Billy Farris has orchestrated 10 touchdown drives over a two-game stretch, engineering five such possessions in each game.
- CSU tries to corral the nation’s fourth-ranked rushing offense.
