FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Rams took to the field Thursday night as Hughes Stadium provided the backdrop for practice. Cycling through several periods during the 1-hour, 15-minute practice, the team continued to play with intensity.
The big hit of the day came as the Rams closed an early thud drill. As the offense ran a screen pass, true freshman Michael Kawulok drove through the defense to blast senior Mike Myers off his feet for an 8-yard loss to set the tone for the live drills.
During the live period, in which the Rams employed their patented scoring system designed to increase the competition for jobs, the offense came up big. In the first red- zone drive, senior Gartrell Johnson took a handoff from senior QB Billy Farris in for an 8-yard touchdown.
When the second team took the field, it wasn’t long until freshman Klay Kubiak completed a 9-yard touchdown pass to sophomore John Mosure. Kubiak is currently competing with junior Grant Stucker and fellow freshmen T.J. Borcky and Alex Kelly for the backup QB position.
Aware of the competition, Borcky served up a 50-yard pass to sophomore Tyson Liggett, who beat his defender and ran in for the third offensive touchdown, as the drill moved back to midfield. Liggett was impressive throughout practice, as he also caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Kubiak earlier in practice.
The Rams defense also played well, causing a forced fumble and nearly completing two interceptions. The final score of the evening was 15-12 in favor of the offense.
Injury Note: Working with their respective squads, the wide receivers saw junior Ryan Gardner return to the group. After departing practice Tuesday with an ankle injury, the junior-college transfer showed significant progress as he began running routes and making hard cuts. Gardner did not wear pads.
The squad’s next practice is set for Friday at 4 p.m. at the fields south of Moby Arena. The most extensive scrimmage of the fall takes place Saturday at Hughes Stadium, but is closed to the public.
