This week’s notable storylines…
- The Rams embark on the second leg of their brutal conference-opening stretch. The Mountain West schedule makers gave CSU the MWC’s three preseason Top 25 teams in succession to begin the conference slate: BYU (Sept. 26), Utah (this week) and TCU (next week). Based on 2008 combined winning percentage, no other team in the nation has a taller three-game hurdle to begin its conference schedule.
- CSU has won three straight home games, and could extend that streak to four on Saturday.
- The Rams have not lost three consecutive games with Steve Fairchild as head coach. CSU looks to get back into the win column after dropping its last two games. The two opponents to whom CSU has lost this year, BYU and Idaho, are a combined 8-2.
- CSU plays its first MWC home game. The Rams last year were 2-2 in Fort Collins against the conference, their only losses a 45-42 setback vs. then-No. 17 BYU on Nov. 1, and a 13-7 decision on Oct. 11 vs. TCU, who finished No. 7 in the final polls.
- For their annual Homecoming and Family Weekend contest, the Rams could have one of their largest home crowds in at least three years, and possibly one of their largest crowds this decade. The game is the centerpiece of a week’s worth of festivities.
- The Rams bid to break a three-year drought against the Utes. CSU’s last win over Utah was Oct. 8, 2005, a 21-17 triumph highlighted by a fourth-quarter goal-line stand.
