FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Ashley Fornstrom may have left the state of Wyoming to play volleyball at Colorado State, but the state of Wyoming still paid attention to Fornstrom’s outstanding career, as she was recently named the 2009 Wyoming Hall of Fame Athlete of the Year.

Fornstrom, a Cheyenne native, was a four-year starter at setter for Colorado State, and holds the Mountain West Conference record for assists in a career with 5,371. She was named MWC Setter of the Year in both her junior and senior seasons, as well as earning AVCA honorable mention All-America honors both seasons. She led the Rams to an 87-34 record during her career at Colorado State and helped the team play in four consecutive NCAA tournaments.

Fornstrom chose Colorado State over Wyoming and she appreciates the fact that the Hall of Fame still honored her even though she left the state.

“I have been honored before in Colorado and by the Mountain West, but this is the first time in Wyoming,” said Fornstrom, who plans to graduate this spring with a human health and development degree. “I think it is a big deal that they gave it to someone who went outside of the state. It means a lot, especially coming from my home state. It is a pretty big honor because they have given it to lots of Olympians.”

The Cheyenne Central graduate earned 10 high school letters in volleyball, basketball and track. She earned all-state honors twice in both volleyball and track, and once in basketball. She helped the Central girls to state titles in track in 2003 and basketball in 2005.

This is the ninth class inducted into the Wyoming Hall of Fame and past Athletes of the Year include wrestler Rulon Gardner, shot putter John Godina and triathlete Barb Metz Lindquist.
