FORT COLLINS, Colo. - With only 26 days left until the opener at CU, the Rams took the next step in fall practice, full pads, and more contact.
The offense put on one of its best performances of the fall with quarterbacks Grant Stucker and Jon Eastman making big play after big play.
Head Coach Steve Fairchild was pleased with how practice went but he also admitted that there are adjustments that need to be made on both sides of the ball.
“I thought they bounced around well today,” Fairchild said. “Our challenge now as we get bumps and bruises, and as we get a little tired, is that we maintain this tempo and keep gaining ground on whoever we’re trying to catch.”
Not only was Fairchild happy with the team’s fifth practice, but he also indicated how pleased he was with the new freshmen and transfers.
Plays of the Day: Halfway through practice during an 11-on-11 drill, Eastman completed three deep passes consecutively. Two passes were to senior Ryan Gardner and one to redshirt freshman Blake Swain.
Not to be outdone by Eastman, Stucker managed to connect on a couple deep passes of his own, both touchdowns. Stucker’s first was a 62-yard toss to senior Rashaun Greer. His second touchdown came near the end of practice. Stucker was hit from behind as he threw the ball but had enough strength to get the ball 41 yards and find Greer in the end zone.
The defense did not allow the offense to shine all day, however. The defensive line managed to make a few tackles in the backfield, including stops by Ty Whittier and Eugene Daniels, and Nuku Latu batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. Junior cornerback DeAngelo Wilkinson got his second interception of the fall off of a deflected pass.
Live scrimmage: The Rams ran their first live scrimmage of the fall Tuesday morning, about 30 plays. Using the coaches’ customized scoring system, the defense defeated the offense, 14-8, in a back-and-forth affair.
Injured: Junior tight end Adam Seymore has not participated in practice since Sunday morning. Fairchild said that he Seymore has a knee injury but does not suspect it to be serious.
Next: The first two-a-days of the season begin Wednesday. The Rams will practice at 7:45 a.m. and then again at 4 p.m.
