FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With just over a week until the season opener against CU, Head Coach Steve Fairchild named Grant Stucker his starting quarterback following Friday’s practice.
“We will start Grant Stucker at CU,” Fairchild said. “He has just played a little more consistently down the stretch. Since last Saturday, I have been pleased with the direction he’s headed.”
Stucker had been in a battle with junior Jon Eastman since spring ball for the starting position. Fairchild said Eastman will be ready to go if called upon.
“I would like to get Jon in there at some point, but it depends on the flow of the game,” Fairchild said.
Stucker said that even though he is the starting quarterback, he still wants Eastman to push him every day at practice.
“Nothing is laid in cement, ever,” said Stucker. “No matter if you’re a four-year starter or like me, just getting named right now.”
The Rams also made history Friday, practicing with simulated crowd noise for the first time in program annals. Using the Indoor Practice Facility, the team practiced under conditions similar to what it will experience in Boulder Sept. 6th.
“I don’t know that it will be that loud down there (Folsom Field),” said Fairchild. “But if it is sometime during the season, I wanted to do it during camp. I wanted to make sure that we did both a 2-minute and a 4-minute and a backed-up situation.”
The Rams will practice at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium Saturday for what Fairchild said will be their longest practice of the fall. It will be closed to the public.
