FORT COLLINS, Colo. – An afternoon thunderstorm forced the Rams into their $13 million indoor practice facility on Monday.
Rain with the occasional clap of thunder began during Period 6. Head Coach Steve Fairchild announced practice would finish inside, and the players jogged over to the new facility. Practice was up and running where it left off after only a 3-minute delay.
During a “thud” period, the offense ran the ball to the outside, forcing offensive linemen Jared Biard to pull. As Biard turned the corner he was met by safety Ezra Thompson, and Thompson put Biard flat on his back, causing a loud roar from the sidelines.
Tim Duffie proved that a coach can still have fun while working hard at practice. Before the Rams were forced inside they were practicing one-on-ones This drill consists of a wide receiver being covered by a cornerback while the quarterback tries to complete each pass. Duffie was trying to get into the head of freshman quarterback Nico Ranieri.Duffie would yell out the apparent score of the drill, giving the defense more points for a pass deflection than if the quarterback was to complete a pass. The drill ended with friendly banter between the coach and quarterback.
All the major plays of the afternoon happened inside. Lou Greenwood made a one-handed circus catch on a 40-yard touchdown reception, which started an echo of cheers throughout the indoor facility. Also making nice plays offensively was Marquise Law, who hauled in two deep passes, both to the corner of the end zone.
The defense was not to be outdone, however. Sophomore cornerback Dominique Vinson, a transfer from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., watched Thompson and Travis Ford make interception after interception last week and Monday he got in on the action. Vinson had two interceptions, both jump balls that were caught at the highest point.
The Rams will be back at practice Tuesday morning at 1 p.m.
Madsen the magician: During the team meeting Sunday night, juniorPaul Madsen held his annual magic show, which was a nice change of pace for the team and very entertaining.
Starr injury: Senior offensive lineman Mark Starr sat out both of Monday's practices with a foot injury. He is listed as day to day.
Under Armour: A representative from Under Armour was out at practice on Monday talking to the Rams about the game cleats they have been testing, making sure they are comfortable with enough time to make adjustments prior to the first game.
