FORT COLLINS, Colo. - With the sun shining early Friday morning, the Rams were out on the practice field as they continued preparations for the season-opening game against Colorado.

The team received a speech from a well-known person from Colorado State University. CSU President Tony Frank arrived at practice and proceeded to talk to the team.

"He didn't ask to talk to the team," said Head Coach Steve Fairchild. "That is what is so cool about Tony is that he shows up on his own. So I asked him if he would take a few minutes to talk to our football team."

After practice, Fairchild spoke of Frank's backing.

"He has been so supportive of me since I have been here," said Fairchild. "I can't say how much I appreciate all the support he and Paul (Kowalczyk) have given me. So I think it is really cool the kids got to hear from him."

On the field, the defense and offense looked sharp throughout different periods. Pete Thomas turned in another solid practice. Thomas hit numerous receivers in stride and also connected on a few deep balls.

Also showing promise was the defensive line. Even though hampered by inexperience at the position, the linemen played like veterans on Friday. On numerous play-action passes, the back-side defensive end stayed in his gap and rushed the quarterback.

The team did not hold any live periods at practice on Friday, but Fairchild said the team will have plenty at the inaugural Ram Club Scrimmage on Saturday.

"There will be the same amount of live," Fairchild said, comparing it to the team's previous Saturday scrimmage. "There are more plays because there are more situations that we are ready to do. I think we will be out there for three hours. If we bounce around good it will be less. Tomorrow is an important practice."

The scrimmage will start at 12 p.m. and is open only to Ram Club members. For fans looking to join the Ram Club, which starts out at as little as $100 year, they will be able to sign up at the scrimmage, as representatives from the athletic department will be there.

New Face: There was a new face out at practice for the Rams on Friday. Sporting only shorts, helmet and a jersey, Max Morgan was participating in certain parts of practice. Coaches originally planned to grayshirt Morgan.

Big plays: During a thud period, Broderick Sargent stopped Chris Nwoke in the backfield for what would have been a loss of yards...Eugene Daniels also stopped a ball-carrier behind the line of scrimmage and followed it up with a quarterback hurry...Lou Greenwood made a couple nice catches down the field on Friday.
